which changed her life.
“The terrible car
accident took me 10 months to recover(康复). During

said Julia.
As soon as she recovered, Julia
gave up working at the restaurant and traveled to
California. One

there were lots of
redwood trees. One of the

People often think of the North Pole(北极) and
the South Pole as similar frozen(冰冻的)
wastelands. They are both places with very low
temperature and few people live there. However,
the
North and South Pole are not much alike as
people may imagine.
The North Pole has no
land, only thick(厚的) ice. Temperatures hardly ever
go above 0°C, at
which water turns into ice.
Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter
temperature are usually as
low as -34.4°C.
4
Although conditions
were very poor, people tried for many centuries to
reach the North Pole.
About 100 years ago, two
men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to
get to this
environment full of trouble and
difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March
8
th
, 1909. It was
really a hard trip
for them.
There are few things more dangerous
than crossing the Arctic(北极圈) on foot. People who
stayed there may face many problems: very low
temperature, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most
of the area is uninhaibite d because few
people can live in such a difficult place.
People might think that with such low
temperature for most of the year, the ice would be
thick and
hard. However, this is not true in
the Arctic. The movement of the sea water under
the ice may
often cause many different changes
on the surface(表面). Sometimes the ice breaks into
two
opening lanes of water called “leads”.
Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to
death in a few
minutes.

Sometimes people come
into your life and you know at once that they are
sure to be there. They
may teach you a lesson
or help you find out who you are or who you want
to become. You never
know who these people may
be: your classmates, teachers, long-lost friends
or even real strangers. 1
Sometimes
things happen to you. At first, they may seem
terrible, painful(痛苦的) and unfair.
2
Everything happens for a reason and nothing
happens by chance or with good or bad luck.
The people you meet affect your life. The
successes and failures(失败)you experience create
who
you are. 3 In fact, they are probably the
most important ones. They tell you that life isn’t
always full
of happiness.
Enjoy every day
even every moment and take from everything that
you possibly can, because
you may never be
able to experience it again. Talk to people you
have never talked to before, and
really
listen. You should set your sights(眼光) high, hold
your head up. 4 You will become more
confident (自信的)and you will be not afraid of
difficulties anymore.
You can make your life
anything you wish. Create your own life and then

Electronic devices(电子装置) are
changing the way people listen to music. But
studies show
the devices may be causing
hearing loss in many people. Some doctors say
people spend too much time
playing electronic
devices. And they also say sound volumes(音量) on
these devices need to
be set lower.
Doctors made a survey in three hundred high
school students and one thousand adults. They were
asked about their use of music devices. 40%of
the students and adults said they set the sound
volumes
at high on their players. More than
half of the students said they would probably not
control their
listening time.
The survey
also found that it was difficult for some people
to hear parts of a discussion between
two
people. Others had to make the sound volume high
on a television or radio to hear it better. And
some experienced ringing in their ears or
other noises. The doctors say hearing loss may not
be
serious for years, but once it happens,
there are few chances to get fine again.
Part
of the problem is the music devices that people
are using. They say using large earphones that
cover the whole ear can protect your hearing
ability. It’s dangerous to use smaller earbuds(耳
塞) .
In fact, about thirty million Americans
have some hearing loss. One third of them lost
their
hearing as a result of loud noises. If
people can turn down the sound volume, there will
be less chance
for them to have hearing loss.
The American speech-language-hearing
organization is working with companies and
government
on setting rules for use of music
devices. The group says the best way to protect
your hearing is to
turn down the player,
control listening time and use earphones.
