Once, the Han Dynasty dispatched an
emissary to the
State of Dian (now Yunnan
Province)and the State of Yelang
(now Guizhou
Province).
The King of Dian asked the emissary from the Han
Dynasty: Han Dynasty and the Stateof Dian,
which is
bigger?
The King of Yelang also asked
the emissary in the same
way: Han Dynasty and
the Stateof Yelang, which is
bigger?
As a matter
of fact, the territories of the State of Dian and
the State of Yelang were only as bigas a
prefecture of the Han
Dynasty, but they closed
their states to the external contact,
shuttheir eyes and stopped their ears, and
didn't understand
the conditions of the
outside world.
Naturally, they didn't know how vast the Han
Dynasty was.
There was an archer named Geng Ying in the State
of Wei.
He went
sightseeing with the King of Wei at Jingtai.
At that time a bird was circling
around in the sky, uttering
sad and shrill
cries now and then.
The King of Wei looked up at it for a while
and said to
Geng Ying:
said.
After a while,
the bird flew near.
Geng
Ying pulled his bow to the full, plucked the
bowstring, and at the
sound the bird fell tothe ground before
their
feet.
The
King of Wei said in surprise:
bird without an
arrow. Your skill inarchery is really
wonderful.
Geng Ying
said:
skill, but because this is a bird of
badluck.
You can hear
how sadly and shrilly it wailed, and see how
tiredly it flew.
It was already wounded, and for a long time could
not find
its companion.
Therefore it couldn't
stand the least fright.
As soon as I twanged my bow, it thought it had
been shot
and fell down of its own accordfrom
the sky.
What a pitiful bird
frightened by the mere twang of a
bowstring!
There was a scholar in the Zhou Dynasty who had
tried
several times in his life to seek for
anofficial post, but failed
again and again
till his temples turned white.
One
day, as he was walking on the road, he looked back
upon the past and shed tears ofsorrow.
Someone asked him:
He replied:
Now I am old and no longer
have any opportunity. That is
why I am
weeping.
The man
asked again:
won recognition?
He replied:
and had all the literaryqualifications.
When I sought for an
official post, unexpectedly the king
liked to
appoint old men.
After the king died, his successor liked to
appoint warriors.
I
made a determined effort to learn martial arts,
but when
I had learned the military skills, the
king who liked martial arts
passed away.
Now the new king
likes to appoint young men, but I am
already
old.
Thus I
have never won recognition in my whole life and
have never held an official post.
