The secret of happiness

An old man walked slowly with a cane(手杖)into the restaurant .His old jacket, worn-out

After he had finished his breakfast, the waitress brought him the change(零钱)from his bill.

“That's because you can’t give up what you are. Let yourself evaporate (蒸发) into the

work for a few days, and I had run out of food. As I had been so busy working, I hardly had friends
nearby who could help.

So I went out to get some food. Usually, I would have gone to the supermarket, but because it

He pointed at the sausage (香肠) and bread I was buying and offered, “l can make you a
sandwich, so you don't have to do it yourself.” So, he made the sandwich and asked me to wait a
moment. He went in the back room and reappeared with a bowl of hot soup. “It will warm you
up,” he said with a gentle smile.

What really warmed me up, though, was not the soup. It was his smile. His kindness made me

It happened many years ago, but I still remember it clearly. That day I was invited to work as a
contest judge (评委) at a college. All of the students had been given a piece of paper with a
topic on it. The first one to speak looked a little unhappy. “My fellow students and respected
judges,” he said loudly, “this is an unfair (不公平的) contest!” “I have been given this paper,”
he continued, “to speak on a topic with just a few minutes’ preparation while those coming after
me have more time to work on their speeches!” He then left the stage and went out of the hall.

I met him later by chance. “Who says life is fair?” I asked him with a smile, and I asked him to
walk with me to my car. “Have you seen the numbers they show when a new car is being
introduced into the market, saying how economic (经济的) it is?” “Yes,” he nodded “But they
put a line after all these numbers. They say all the numbers are in ideal (理想的) road
conditions!” “Yes,” he said again. “Can you show me some ideal road conditions?” I asked him,
and he smiled. “The car that sells well is the one that will provide power and speed on the worst
roads. That car is the winner!”

We had reached my car. “Don’t look for ideal contest conditions,” I said. “Fight the unfair and
come out a winner!”

I looked back as I drove away and saw him smile and wave to me.

One Saturday, we were preparing to go away for the weekend when my daughter heard cries
for help. When I went out, I discovered our elderly neighbor had fallen on her front steps. She
was clearly in pain, so I helped her inside her house and settled here on the bed.

I noticed her room was very narrow and dark. It was obvious she hadn't cleaned it for a long
time. She insisted she didn't need an ambulance(救护车)and that someone would be around
soon, so I left her with a bottle of water at her side.

As I left I felt sad when I realized that we hadn't communicated with her, except a few smiles,
for the past 18 months. She didn't know my name and I didn't know hers, and I hadn't even
noticed that she hadn't been outside for weeks because of bad pain in her back.

That weekend I visited my grandmother for her 80th birthday and noticed how clean and
spacious her flat seemed in comparison to my neighbour's. My neighbour, as far as I knew, had no
family regularly dropping by.

When I returned home I went to visit her. Very grateful to see me, she explained she was okay.
Yet, unable to bend down due to her back, her kitchen was filling with garbage that she was
unable to take out by herself.

We've become good friends and chat every second day. She keeps thanking me for my kindness,
but I enjoy helping her. Now, every time I return from putting out her garbage, collecting her mail

6.阅读下列短文,从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Social media plays an important role in our lives. We check our social

media accounts(账户) such as emails and Facebook almost every day. Lately, people like
posting pictures just for the purpose of getting others' attention through their “flowers”, no
matter whether these pictures are good or not. Recently, I was very annoyed with these types of
posts, so I decided to stop using social media for one week.

After not using social media for a week, I can honestly say that everything has changed. Before
last week, I used to check Facebook more than five times a day, as well as of my other social
accounts, and I couldn't understand why I did that. Now I check Facebook much less.

People are so obsess(迷恋的) with posting pictures that have no meaning to them just for
the purpose of posting something online. Whenever I look at Instagram, all of the comments on
pictures are the same. People depend on how many “likes” they get on what they post as an
achievement. I just want to say, “None of it matters!” As I start to fully understand this now, I
wonder why I have social media if all of this annoys me so much. But then I realize that I actually
post meaningful things that my friends enjoy, and to me, that's more important than getting
“likes” on a picture.

Maybe as a society, we are using social media wrongly. I think we sometimes forget that social
media helps us contact with people who are far away from us. I think it's a beautiful thing that I
am able to go on Facebook and feel connected with people that I don't have the opportunity of
seeing every single day anymore.

A. Because she had very few “flowers”. B. Because she had got tired of the posts on it.

wrong with her computer.

(2)What do we know about the writer from Paragraph 2?

A. She didn't know how to use Facebook. B. She didn't like posting things on Facebook.

C. She used to check her social media accounts a lot. D. She has given up using social media
forever.

(3)According to the writer, people should use social media to ______.

A. receive important comments B. learn about other people's lives

C. get “likes” from their “flowers” D. connect with faraway friends and family

(4)What is the main idea of the passage?

A. People should not use social media. B. Technology is changing our lives today.

C. Comments on social media are interesting. D. Social media should be used for good
purposes.

9.阅读理解

Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly(蝴蝶). The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis
(蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly
comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn't
struggle(挣扎;奋斗) to leave the chrysalis, it can't fly! The struggle develops the energy in
the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges of life bring out the best in young people
and make the fly.

When people are young, meeting and overcoming challenges will make them strong and ready
to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are

people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many big
supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was
young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father's
death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the
challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.

Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents
and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some
activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing, camping,
volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We
must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of
tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people
learn to meet challenges and overcome them.

One of my best friends went abroad to enjoy her holidays, so the job of looking after her dog
Missy has been given to me. A few months ago, Missy came to my friend's house. She looked
terrible. She has been abused for a long time.

When we first visited my friend and Missy, my friend had to gently pull her over on a lead (牵

Clearly Missy came to the right home. My friend has given birth to a baby of his own and shows
the love of a mother. This is just what Missy needs. Thanks to the love of my friend, she has
changed into a new dog step by step. Sadly, she is still afraid of strange humans. I hate to imagine
what the dog must have gone through.

Now, Missy trusts me completely, so I can touch her berry(肚皮).While standing, she will
jump up so gently to be closer to me, putting her paws(爪子)on my legs as she looks at me
