[2016·育才中学联考二]I went to the Tsavo National
Park in
northern Kenya for a film. We set off
early for a distant water hole. A huge
elephant covered with dry mud, drank calmly
and deeply. He might have
traveled 50 km to
reach the water. He wasn't going to hurry now.
He'd
drink a while and rest in the shade, and
then drink again or so we thought.
What
actually happened was that he drank deeply and
stepped away.
S
Then he
suddenly
W1
fell down. Within minutes he
was dead.
We called animal doctor Jeremiah
Poghon immediately. He removed
the head of a
poisoned
W2
arrow from the elephant's body,
and let out
P1
over
100 liters of pus
(胺)-the result of the elephant's meeting with a
poacher
(偷猎者) months before.
Today's
poacher shoots from a blind. He fires an arrow,
covered with
poison, into the body of an
elephant. If the poacher is lucky, the elephant
might die in an hour or twoP2; if not, he
might have to follow the elephant
for days
before it dies. Often the arrow head fails to kill
the elephant at
once-it doesn't mean the
poison won't finally kill the elephant, but it
will
be a slow death.
Living in Tsavo
through these times, I could see the results of
poaching from time to time. When I think about
the death of that elephant,
what stays with me
is the extraordinary
W3
silence after the
shocking
W4
sound of his body hitting
the ground. I took some comfort from the
knowledge that as the dead body returned to
the soil, some animals would
benefit-but I
couldn't escape
W5
the feeling that with
the death of such a
large animal, the world
seemed to be a poorer and emptier place.

may soon have
a new meaning for millions of people who have no

About 700 million people around the world are

[2016·安徽示范高中联考]Many people write to newspapers
and
magazines to express their opinions.
Letters to the editor must carry the
writer's
full name, address and telephone number, although
the
information is not necessary for
publication. This requirement to provide
personal particulars is a clear indication
that the writers are held
responsible
for what they say. When a writer wants his voice
heard, he
needs to claim ownership of his
voice. __1__
“People today prefer living
together to putting their signatures on a
marriage certificate because they refuse to
accept responsibility for the
relationship,”said social worker Ken Yip,“and
this is what is causing a
lot of family
problems.”When we sign a paper, for example, a
business
contract or a bank document, the
signature is a seal of consent, an
agreement
to take the matter seriously. __2__ The absence of
a signature,
they explain, tells us that the
writer cannot be too serious and therefore
does not deserve a reply.
__3__Multi-billionaire Mr King donates
generously to charity
several times a year. He
gives simply because he wants to help but not for
the publicity his donations may bring, and he
does not want his good
deeds to make news. In
other cases, people insist on anonymity because
they are afraid of the consequences of
revealing their identity. __4__
__5__ The
answer is very personal and lies in how much we
want to
get involved. We all have a name. It
is a matter of responsibility to use it
when
we make a statement,a claim or an accusation. We
all want to honor
our own names, and it is
only by stamping our expression of an opinion
with our own name that we honor what we say.
A.Crime witnesses may be willing to assist the
police, but most are
unwilling to give their
names when reporting a crime.
B.Sometimes we
have no idea when to sign our names.
C.What's
the meaning of your name?
D.Responsibility is
the name of the game.
E.Name or no name?
F.Most governments and many organizations will
not process written
complains if they do not
bear the writer's signature.

One possible version:
Dear_Sophia,
I_am_glad_to_hear_from_you.
To be honest, I sometimes have the
same
experience as you. But you have to know that
procrastination is the
thief of time. The
following advice may help you overcome it soon.
The most effective means to solve the problem
is that you can make a
“to do” list. For
example, you can write “Finish homework before
Saturday night” on your plan. If you manage to
finish it, you can reward
yourself.
Otherwise, punish yourself. What's more, you can
find a person
to remind you to finish work at
any time. Then you can arrange your most
important work at efficient times, like 8-10
o'clock. Different people
base different
efficient times. But it doesn't matter what time
it is. Just
don't waste time, following the
schedule strictly. Last but not the least, do
it now, just from now.
