(英语)英语阅读理解练习题及答案含解析

一、高中英语阅读理解
1.阅读理解

Castle Dale is a small town in central Utah. My grandpa's farm is a few miles to the north. I
grew up there. Milking a cow, feeding the chickens and cutting firewood were daily routines.
Grandpa had me carrying a broom to do snow cleaning when it was actually taller than I was. This
was the work kids like me learned to do at a young age.

I was tall, very tall at a really young age. My unusual height caused people to look, ask
questions, laugh, tease, and sometimes even challenge me to fight. I was teased cruelly as a kid.
It wasn't fair, I knew, but that was just the way it was. Luckily, I was taught at a very young age a
very important lesson. I am different and that's Okay—I'm unique and I matter. No one could ever
take that away from me. I knew this then, and I know this now. That alone helped me through the
frustrations and heartaches of normal life.

When I was in junior high school, I realized something else that helped me cope. Most teasing
came from one of two places—people who were either jealous or ignorant (愚昧). I couldn't
change the way they were, but I could change the way I felt. I was not going to feel bad because
of their ignorance or jealousy. It wasn't worth it. Realizing this didn't stop them, or change the
fact that these comments hurt. It did, however, give me a way to understand these people and
deal with their treatment in a way that was okay for me.

These things still happen today. It will probably happen the rest of my life. I will always be 7
feet, 6 inches (2.29 meters) tall. I wouldn't change that for anything. People will always look
because it is not every day that you see someone that tall. I learned that at a young age and I
now try to teach my own children that they are unique and they matter. That is the message I
give to you. Regardless of your race, religion, background, or circumstances ... Being different is
okay.

A. He accepted the fact of being different and let it go. B. He felt angry failing to change
others' opinions.

C. He felt hurt hearing people's negative comments. D. He hated people's ignorance and
jealousy.

A study showed that the experiences children have in their first few years are important. These
experiences affect the development of the brain. When children receive more attention, they
often have higher IQs. Babies receive information when they see, hear and feel things, which
makes connections between different parts of the brain. There are a hundred trillion(万
亿)connections in the brain of a three-year-old child.

Researcher Judit Gervain tested how good newborns are at distinguishing different sound
patterns. Her researchers produced images of the brains of babies as they heard different sound
patterns. For example, one order was mu-ba-ba. This is the pattern
mu-ba-ge. This is the pattern “A-B-C”. The images showed that the part of the brain responsible
for speech was more active during theA-B-Bpattern. This shows that babies can tell the
difference between different patterns. They also were sensitive to where it occurred in the order.

Gervain is excited by these findings because the order of sounds is the building block of words
and grammar.

end, it makes a big difference: John caught the bear.' is very different from 'The bear caught
John.'”

Researchers led by scientist Patricia Kuhl have found that language delivered by televisions,
audio books, the Internet, or smartphones-no matter how educational-doesn't appear to be
enough for children's brain development. They carried out a study of nine-month-old American
babies. They expected the first group who'd watched videos in Chinese to show the same kind of
learning as the second group who were brought face-to-face with the same sounds. Instead they
found a huge difference. The babies in the second group were able to distinguish between similar
Chinese sounds as well as native listeners. But the other babies-regardless of whether they had
watched the video or listened to the audio-learned nothing.

(1)What makes connections in a baby's brain?

A. Having a higher IQ. B. Experiencing new information.

C. The baby' early age. D. The connection with other babies.

(2)What did Judit Gervain and her team find in the experiment?

A. Babies identify different sound patterns.

B. Word order is relevant to meaning.

C. Babies can well understand different words.

D. A certain brain region processes language.

(3)What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 3?

A. Grammar is important in learning languages.

B. Different orders have different meanings.

C. Different languages have different grammar.

D. Words have different sounds.

(4)What is the main conclusion from the study led by Patricia Kuhl?

A. Babies shouldn't watch a lot of television.

B. Listening to different languages develops babies' brain.

C. Foreign languages help babies' brain develop.

D. Social communication improves babies' brain development.

6.阅读理解

During this shopping season, salesmen will come up with different strategies to get your
business. Many product companies use specific colors to cause positive emotions and compete
for a sale. However, sight is not the only sensory (感官的) retail that companies use. Sounds and
smells can also influence consumers' purchasing decisions.

Nobel Prize-winning research shows that our sense of smell has great power to cause an
emotional response. A study published earlier this year compared purchasing in a French flower
shop when the smell of lavender (薰衣草) was given off and when it wasn't. It found that the
smell increased the number of consumers' purchasing items and the amount of their purchases.
An earlier study using Nike shoes found that consumers desired the shoes more, and were willing
to pay more, when the room had a mixed smell of flowers. Realizing the subconscious impact of
smell, many stores apply artificial scents (气味) through their heating and air-conditioning vents
(通风口) or place scent machines above their doors. For instance, a coconut scent might make
that bikini more appealing as you long for a vacation.

Ever felt frenzied due to a store's fast-paced music? Or calmed by a piece of light music? A
retailer's choice of music can have a big impact on consumers' moods. One study found that
when subjected to loud music, consumers will spend less time in a store. But interestingly, the
researchers did not find a difference in sales or customers' satisfaction. Another interesting
finding from a recent study was that customers actually shop longer when exposed to unfamiliar
music. Just as department stores use different scents in certain departments, many use different
music in some areas to appeal to varying consumers.

Well, you could always leave the store and take a break, but the food court probably isn't your
best choices as brands like Cinnabon and Panera Bread also use scents as part of their customers'
experience. Online retailers (零售商) use a variety of other strategies to get your business, but
you can always neglect those and enjoy the familiar scents of home.

(1)The passage is mainly about ________.

A. consumers' favorite sounds and smells while shopping

B. shopping malls' strategies for satisfying consumers

C. some special services from super shopping malls

D. two factors affecting consumers' shopping decisions

(2)What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?

A. Decorating stores with flowers becomes a fashion.

B. Shops with special smells can attract more consumers.

C. Smells can actually help businessmen gain more profits.

D. The products with a kind of special smell are more popular.

(3)How does music have an effect on consumers?

A. It controls consumers' desire for shopping.

B. It influences how long consumers stay in a shop.

C. It gives consumers the satisfaction of enjoying shopping.

D. Whether consumers are willing to buy things depends on it.

(4)Which of the following can replace the underlined word “frenzied” in Paragraph 3?

A. Satisfied. B. Depressed. C. Surprised. D. Excited.

(5)What does the writer try to express in the last paragraph?

A. Online shopping is becoming more and more popular nowadays.

B. People should spend more time at home with family members.

C. People can choose to get rid of salesmen's promotion strategies.

D. Smells and sounds are important for consumers' shopping experience.

7.阅读理解

Why do you go to the library? For books, yes--but you like books because they tell stories. You
hope to get lost in a story or be transported into someone else's life. At one type of library, you
can do just that--even though there's not a single book.

At a Human Library, instead of books, you can “borrow” people. Individuals volunteer as
human “books” and participants in the event can “read” the book--meaning they would have a
one-on-one conversation with the volunteer and share in a dialogue about that individual's
experience. “Books” are volunteers from all walks of life who have experienced discrimination (歧
视) based on race, religion, class, gender identity, age, lifestyle choices, disability and other
aspects of their life

For a certain amount of time, you can ask them questions and listen to their stories, which are
as fascinating and as attractive as any you can find in a book. Many of the stories have to do with
some kind of stereotype. You can speak with a refugee (难民), a soldier suffering from PTSD, a
homeless person or a woman living with HIV. The Human Library encourages people to challenge
their own long- held beliefs-to truly get to know, and learn from someone they might otherwise
make a quick judgment about.

According to its website, the Human Library is “a place where difficult questions are expected,
appreciated and answered.” It provides the opportunity for the community to share and
understand the experiences of others in their community.

The Human Library Organization came to be in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2000. Ronni Abergel,
his brother Dany, and some colleagues hosted a four-day event during a major Northern
European festival, hoping to raise awareness about violence among youth. After the success of
this event, Abergel founded the Human Library Organization, which has been growing ever since.

Though there are a few permanent human libraries, most aren't places at all, but events.

Though many do take place at physical libraries, you don't need a library card—anyone can come
and be part of the experience. There have been human library events all over the globe, in
universities and in pubs, from Chicago to Tunis to Edinburgh to San Antonio.

The stories these tell range from fascinating to heartbreaking and everything in
between. And that's the very point of the organization--to prove that no person can be summed
up in just one word. It seeks to show people that you truly can't judge a book by its cover---or by
its title or label.

(1)The “books” in human libraries are____________.

A. long-held beliefs attracting individuals B. inspiring stones motivating people in trouble

C. events in which people can talk to volunteers D. unfairly-treated people sharing their
experiences

(2)The event in Copenhagen is significant because it_______.

A. aimed to help the young suffering from violence B. attempted to replace traditional
physical libraries

C. laid a foundation for the Human Library Organization D. led to a pleasing development for
the community with racism

(3)In human libraries, the readers are likely to_________.

A. deepen their understanding of people B. enrich their own personal experiences

C. hear the stories from all over the world D. make quick judgments about the “books”

(4)The main purpose of the passage is to _________.

A. compare and evaluate B. inform and explain

C. discuss and persuade D. analyze and suggest

【答案】(1)D

(2)C

(3)A

(4)B

Average humans can consume 15 or more drinks in plastic bottles a month. If you were born
after 1978, and live until 80 years old, you will leave behind a minimum of 14,400 plastic bottles
on this planet. These bottles take hundreds of years to break down into tiny pieces of plastic,
never to completely disappear. Most of the waste is consumed by fish and birds, which has
shortened their lifetime greatly.

The Plastic Bottle Village is just a great idea that might finally save us from being buried in
plastic. It's a community in Panama that is going to be made of used bottles. The design process
begins with building steel frames, which are then filled with these bottles. Once this step is
complete, and electrical and plumbing (管道装置) lines are put inside, the plastic walls are
covered by concrete—both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that the
walls are made of plastic. Besides, the material will keep the house 17°C cooler than the outside,

which is the biggest benefit to people living inside.

The village is the brainchild (主意) of Robert Bezeau with the intention of setting up several
environmental projects. Having started a recycling program four years ago, during which a
number of plastic bottles were collected, he started to think of how they could be put to use.
Soon enough, he decided to use them to build houses, and came up with a basic idea for the
construction process.

The project hopes to make people conscious of the waste that these bottles create so that they
can do more to protect the environment. The village will also create an education center that will
teach individuals from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as construction materials for shelter.
Recycled bottles could neutralize the negative effect of your passage on this planet, and move
closer to leaving only your “footprints”.

(1)What does Paragraph 1 intend to tell us?

A. The reason for buying fewer drinks. B. The difficult situation of wildlife.

C. The amount of plastic waste. D. The seriousness of plastic pollution.

(2)What is the biggest benefit to people living in the Plastic Bottle Village?

A. The house will be much cooler than normal ones. B. The material of construction will be
reduced a lot.

C. The newly-made house can save a lot of electricity. D. The waste of the house can be
consumed by fish and birds.

(3)Which of the following words can best describe Robert?

A. Creative. B. Courageous. C. Enthusiastic. D. Sensitive.

(4)The main purpose of Robert's projects is to

A. provide shelter for locals B. reuse all deserted plastic bottles

C. popularize the use of plastic bottles D. raise people's environmental awareness

【答案】(1)D

(2)A

in a nearby notepad before showing her words to a passing café waiter:

allowed to speak, and only communicate by writing in notepads.

The concept rises by a desire to be alone among young Japanese, a situation brought by
economic uncertainty, a shift in traditional family support structures and the growing social
isolation. The phenomenon is not limited to coffee shops but covers everything from silent discos,
where participants dance alone wearing wireless headphones connected to the DJ, to products
such as small desk tents designed for conversation-free privacy in the office. One Kyoto company

complete with white dress and ceremony, and the only thing missing is the groom. The trend has
its own media expression-“botchi-zoku”, referring to individuals who consciously choose to do
things completely on their own.

One recent weekday afternoon, Chihiro Higashikokubaru, a 23-year-old nurse, travelled 90
minutes from her home, to Tokyo on her day off in order to enjoy some solo time. Speaking
quietly at the entrance of the cafe, Miss Higashikokubaru said: “I heard about this place via

very few quiet places in Tokyo, and it's a big busy city. I just want to come and sit somewhere
quietly on my own. I'm going to drink a cup of tea and maybe do some drawings. I like the idea of

Regardless of how far we'd like to believe gender(性别) equality in the workplace has come,
there's still a yawning gap between male and female leaders in the professional world. A 2018
statistic shows that women nowadays hold just 5.8 percent of CEOs positions at S&P 500
companies, according to Catalyst.

While it's not a huge shock that women are somewhat underrepresented in leadership
positions, what is surprising though, is the fact that females may actually be better suited to lead
in almost every area, at least according to new findings from the BI Norwegian Business School.

In their research,Professor yvind L. Martinsen and Professor Lars Glas surveyed (调查)2,900
managers with a special focus on personality types. The results were clear: Women scored higher
than men in four of the five major leadership-centric categories.

While some people believe that men inherently make better leaders — probably because they
picture a leader with a commanding voice, which is more typical of men than women — this
piece of research suggests that women are better at methodical management and goal-setting,
openness, sociability and supportiveness, as well as ability to communicate clearly.

There was one area in which men scored higher than women, though, and that was on
emotional stability and ability to face job-related pressure and stress. The results suggest that
women are more sensitive to the effects of high-pressure or highly emotional situations.

Obviously,it's important to consider individual(个人的) differences. Anyone, regardless of
gender, may be an inspiring leader and a competent boss. But next time you're hiring for a
management position, you just might want to give the resumes(简历) from female candidates a
harder look.

(1)What makes us shocked much at leadership positions?

A. Women are worse than men. B. Men take almost all high positions.

C. There is a huge gap between genders. D. Women might behave better in every field.

(2)Which of the following can best replace the underlined word ''inherently” in paragraph 4?

A. properly B. potentially C. naturally D. normally

(3)Which of the following may be the best title of this text?

A. How We Can Figure Out The Boss. B. Why Women Are Better Than Men.

C. Why Women Make The Best Bosses. D. How We Can Tell Gender Difference.

(4)Who might have special interest in this article?

A. Job hunters. B. Employers. C. Employees. D. Male bosses.

13.阅读理解

A car dealership in my hometown of Albuquerque was selling six to eight new cars a day. I was
also told that 72 percent of this dealership's first-time visitors returned for a second visit.

I was curious. How does a car dealership get 72 percent of its first-time visitors to return? And
how can they sell six to eight cars a day in a declining car market?

When I walked into Saturn of Albuquerque that Friday, the staff there didn't know me from
Adam; yet they shared with me their pricing policy, the profit margin on every model, and staff
income. They even opened their training manuals for my review and invited me back on Saturday
if I wanted more information.

On Sunday, the day after my second visit to the Saturn store, my wife, Jane, and I were walking
as we frequently do. On this particular June morning, Jane gently slipped her hand in mine and
said tenderly, "I don't know if you remember, but today's my fifth anniversary of being cancer-
free." I was surprised, partially because I was embarrassed that I had forgotten and, partially
because.... Well, I didn't know what to do with Jane's information.

The next day, Monday, Jane went off to work teaching school. Still not knowing what to do to
mark this special occasion, I did the most impetuous thing I've ever done in my life: I bought a
new Saturn. I didn't pick the color or the model, but I paid cash and told them I'd bring Jane in on
Wednesday at 4:30. I told them why I was buying the car.

On Tuesday, it dawned on me that Jane always wanted a white car. I called the sales consultant
at Saturn, and I asked him if he had anything white in the store. He said he had one left but he

couldn't guarantee it'd still be available on Wednesday at 4:30 because they were selling so fast. I
said I'd take my chances and asked him to put it in the showroom.

Wednesday came. Unexpectedly, someone in our family was admitted to the hospital. So, it
wasn't until 9:30 Saturday morning when we finally made our way to the Saturn store. Jane had
never been in a Saturn store. When we went through the front door, the Lord took control of her
feet and her mouth. She saw that little white Saturn coupe all the way across the showroom floor.
She quickly passed a multi-colored sea of automobiles, sat in the little white Saturn and said, "
Oh, what a pretty little car. Can I have a new car?" I said, "No. Not until our son graduates from
college." She said, "I'm sick and tired of driving that old Dodge, I want a new car." I said, "I
promise, just three more semesters and he'll be out."

Next, Jane walked around to the front of the car. As she looked it over, she let out the most
blood-curdling, shrill scream I'd ever heard in 29 years of marriage.

Now, before I tell you why Jane screamed, let me tell you what the sales consultant had done.
He had ordered a large, professionally engraved sign (white letters on blue). The sign stood alone
on the hood of the little white Saturn coupe. It said "Congratulations, Jane. This car is yours.
Five years cancer-free. Let's celebrate life. From Team Saturn" Every employee at Saturn of
Albuquerque had signed the back of that sign.

Jane saw it, screamed, collapsed in my arms and cried loudly. I didn't know what to do. I was in
tears. I took out my invoice (发票) from the previous Monday, pointing to the white coupe,
said, "No, honey, this car isn't yours. I bought you this one." I tapped the invoice with my index
finger. Jane said, "No, I want this one right here."

While this conversation was going on, there was no one in the store. The sales consultant had
arranged it so that we could share the moment alone. Even so, it's impossible to have a lot of
privacy when so many people are standing outside the showroom windows looking in. When
Jane screamed and collapsed in my arms, I saw everybody outside applaud and begin to cry.

Though it seems that the world couldn't possibly function without plastics, plastics are a
remarkably recent invention. The first plastic bags were introduced in the 1950s, the same
decade that plastic packaging began gaining popularity in the United States. This growth has
happened so fast that science is still catching up with the change. Plastics pollution research, for
instance, is still a very early science.

We put all these plastics into the environment, but we still don't really know what the
outcomes are going to be. What we do know, though, is disturbing. Ocean plastic is estimated to
kill millions of marine animals every year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are
known to have been affected by it. One in three leatherback turtles, which often mistake plastic
bags for jellyfish, have been found with plastic in their bellies. Ninety percent of seabirds are now
eating plastics on a regular basis. By 2050, that figure is expected to rise to 100 percent.

And it's not just wildlife that is threatened by the plastics in our seas. Humans are consuming
plastics through the seafood we eat. I could understand why some people see ocean plastic as a
disaster, worth mentioning in the same breath as climate change. But ocean plastic is not as
complicated as climate change. There are no ocean trash deniers (否认者), at least so far. To do
something about it, we don't have to remake our planet energy system.

This is not a problem where we don't know what the solution is. We know how to pick up
garbage. Anyone can do it. We know how to deal with it. We know how to recycle. We can all
start by thinking twice before we use single-use plastic products. Things that may seem ordinary,
like using a reusable bottle or a reusable bag-when taken collectively, these choices really do
make a difference.

(1)Why is plastics pollution research still a very early science?

plastics pollution research is too difficult.

The cost of living in countries like the U.S., Britain, Australia or France has skyrocketed in recent
years. However, if you're willing to leave your country and explore life in other areas, there are
many countries boasting an extremely cheap and low cost of living. Check out the following
countries when planning your next move.

Ecuador

Ecuador is similar to the United States in many ways, and as a result has become a popular
American getaway. They even use the U.S. Dollar for their currency. In this country, it's cheaper to

around $$50000 and hire someone to tend to it while you're away

Mexico

Although the country is known for its poverty ridden streets, there are many wealthier areas
that provide every facility you might need. You can live off a mere $$700 to $$800 a month in
Mexico, and this includes rent for a nice place, facilities, food, and any sightseeing.

Argentina

Argentina has been a popular tourist destination for many years. It has great restaurants, a rich
history, and many places to explore. Not to mention, it's not very expensive to live here. A decent
sized home can cost around $$139000, which is relatively cheap in relation to homes in the United
States.

Vietnam

Vietnam has also become a popular tourist destination in recent years. There are many million
dollar luxury homes by the beach, but you can find a modest fiat or small home for around
$$25000 to $$50000 if you search in the right areas.

Oil is essential for modern life. About 64 percent of the world's oil is located in the Middle East,
but the heaviest consumers of oil are Europe, America, and Japan. The problem lies in getting the
oil from the countries that produce it to the countries that consume it. This is mainly done using
oil tankers. Usually the oil is shipped safely and with no problems, but occasionally there is a
disaster.

Every year millions of tons of oil are spilled into the ocean. Although this is only a small
percentage of the total amount shipped around the world each year, this spilled oil can have
terrible effects on ocean life, including the coastlines where the oil washes up onto shore.

One of the worst oil spills in history occurred along the Alaskan coastline in 1989, when the
Exxon Valdez tanker ran aground off the coast of Alaska, spilling 42 million liters of oil. Although it
wasn't the largest oil spill, the disaster was terrible because it occurred in such a sensitive natural
area. In this spill, the tanker's captain, who was tired from overwork and drinking alcohol, had
gone to take a rest. He gave control of the ship to another sailor, who was unfamiliar with the
route. The ship ran onto Bligh Reef. Damaged by the reef, the ship leaked oil out into the ocean.
More than 1,600 kilometers of coastline were affected by the oil spill. Many birds and otters died
as a result of the oil covering their skin, and many other sea creatures and the animals that fed on
them were also severely affected.

(1)Which country is NOT among the largest consumers of oil?

A. Japan B. Iraq C. America D. Germany

(2)What does the underlined “them” refer to?

A. The birds. B. The otters. C. The sea creatures. D. The birds and the otters.

(3)Which of the following statement is true?

A. The oil leak of Alaska is because the captain was unfamiliar with the route. B. Many birds
and otters died from eating the spilled oil.

18.阅读理解

Someone sent me an email urging me to acquire a lot more resources, suggesting could do so
much more good if I had an 8 or 9 figure net income of 6 like I've been doing for years. He
claimed to have acquired a great deal of wealth himself and found it highly beneficial to fueling
his path with a heart.

As I consider his suggestion, I find myself not having much clarity(清晰的思维)as to what I'd do
with I million or 10 million more money flowing through my life. I put so much attention on
creativity, fulfillment, exploration, relationships, etc. that I find it difficult to intelligently imagine
how more financial resources could provide extra fuel for that, except in small ways or in ways
that aren't particularly meaningful to me.

Lately I've been considering what it would be like to deliberately reduce my income for a while
and see if I could live on much less, just for the experience. What if I capped my net personal
income at $$10,000 per year, for instance? That isn't such a big deal to me, though, since I already
went through a period of low income like that during the 1990s, and I learned that I could still do
what I love regardless of income.

I've never worked in a business environment-the only job I've ever had was working for $$6hour
in a video game store while I was in college. So I've never seen how larger operations allocate
resources. That's probably why I haven't pushed myself to acquire more. As I mentioned in my
book. Money and Your Path With a Heart,my main financial goal in life was to make money
irrelevant in my life.

I'm not interested in building an empire. What interests me is exploring personal growth and
sharing what I learn along the way. In some ways I feel that acquiring and acquiring and allocating

more resources could become a big distraction. I'm already doing what I want to be doing, so why
rick distracting myself to acquire more resources, especially when I lack the idea about how I
should treat such resources? I like having freedom and flexibility, and I don't really see how
more resources would meaningfully improve that.

(1)Why did the man email the author?

A. To ask the author to fuel his path. B. To lend some money to the author.

C. To share his opinion about wealth. D. To urge the author to earn more money.

(2)Which of the following can describe the author's personality?

A. Optimistic and devoted. B. Independent and cooperative.

C. Unfortunate but positive. D. Wealthy but hardhearted.

(3)What does the underlined word

A. Limited B. Spent C. Increased D. Distributed

(4)The following are true EXCEPTA________.

A. the author might be a professional writer B. the author is good at designing video games

C. the author is interested in exploring his personal growth D. the author might be a person
who likes sharing his knowledge

Forcing waiters and waitresses to survive on tips from customers rather than normal wages is a
pointless, crude, and unique American custom that, in the past several years, a handful of
progressive restaurant owners have attempted to do away with. Danny Meyer, CEO of Union
Square Hospitality Group, is about to join their ranks and has announced that he plans to
gradually stop tipping at the company's 13 restaurants.

What, exactly, is wrong with tipping? As Brian Palmer has explained, more or less it's
everything. To start, leaving a waiter's pay in the hands of customers has a feeling of classism (阶
级歧视). And in theory, handing restaurant customers the power to tip is at least supposed to
motivate better service. This fails in practice because humans turn out to be pretty arbitrary (随
意的) about their tipping behavior. Research has shown that the amount diners tip has very little
to do with their level of satisfaction. All of this doesn't encourage waiters and waitresses to do
anything but turn over as many tables as possible.

Tipping is also very unfair to kitchen staff. The law allows restaurants to divide tips between
front-of-the-house workers like waiters, hosts, hostesses, and bartenders (调酒师), but not cooks.
This creates a system in which the people serving the food in a restaurant can earn more than the
people preparing it.

One of the most fascinating parts of Meyer's move is that, unlike some restaurant owners who
have taken an anti-tipping stand, he won't simply add a standard extra charge to diners' bills.
Rather, Union Square Hospitality Group means to raise menu prices enough to fully cover the cost
of a meal. If Meyer manages to move away from tipping at all without hurting his profits, it would
almost certainly set the stage for others to follow suit.

(1)What's Danny Meyer's attitude towards stopping tipping?

A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.

(2)What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?

A. Tipping may disturb the restaurants' management. B. Tipping will guarantee diners high
quality service.

C. Tipping can arouse the staff's enthusiasm for work. D. Tipping will bring customers a
sense of satisfaction.

(3)What can we know about Union Square Hospitality group?

A. Brian Palmer is in charge of it now. B. Its cooks earn much more than its servers.

C. Restaurant tipping has been totally banned there. D. Diners will be charged more for the
dishes there.

(4)What is the topic of the passage?

A. Restaurants' getting rid of tipping. B. Difficulties that restaurants are faced with.

C. The popularity of no-tipping restaurants. D. Tips on running restaurants successfully.
