The study revealed previously undiscovered relations between specific personality
characteristics and specific eye movement tendencies, according to a summary in Britain's Daily

resonance(共鸣). Both the kids and their parents will find that their hearts are being drawn closer.
But this kind of feeling has just proved that there is a big spiritual barrier between the modern
parents and children.

The TV shows like

confusion in children's education and the appeal for the balance between career and family.

In real life, on the one hand the young parents feel helpless because they are too busy to

to do so. The data collected by HNTV shows that nearly two-thirds of their audience are female,

mother is watching the show with her young children, while her husband is still at work or
trapped in socializing, or maybe is just playing computer games in the bedroom. The story of a
child without the company of father is still going on. In fact, it is sometimes the same to mothers.
In a modern family, it is often the old who take the responsibility of raising a child. The
participation of mother in the children's education is also very low.

It is just this kind of confusion where the parents have gone in the modern family education,
and where the parents will guide their children to go that ,Dad?
If a child wants to grow up healthily and safely into a modern citizen with independent
personality and free spirit, it is very important for him or her to follow the parents who serve as
their first teacher. Maybe this is the real reason why such kind of TV programs could get hot. The
truth is that children will go where their parents go; and society will go where the children go.

Norman Garmezy, a development psychologist at the University of Minnesota, met thousands
of children in his four decades of research. A nine-year-old boy in particular stuck with him. He
has an alcoholic mother and an absent father. But each day he would walk in to school with a
smile on his face. He wanted to make sure that
know his mother's incompetence.” The boy exhibited a quality Garmezy identified as “resilience”.

Resilience presents a challenge for psychologists. People who are lucky enough to never
experience any sort of adversity (逆境) won't know how resilient they are. It's only when they're
faced with obstacles, stress, and other environmental threats that resilience, or the lack of it,
comes out. Some give in and some conquer.

Garmezy's work opened the door to the study of the elements that could enable an individual's
success despite the challenges they faced. His research indicated that some elements had to do
with luck, but quite large set of elements was psychological, and had to do with how the children
responded to the environment. The resilient children had what psychologists call an “internal
lens of control(内控点)”. They believed that they, and not their circumstances, affected their
achievements. The resilient children saw themselves as the arrangers of their own fates.

Ceorge Bonanno has been studying resilience for years at Columbia University's Teachers
College. He found that some people are far better than others at dealing with adversity. This
difference might come from perception(认知) whether they think of an event as traumatic(创伤),
or as an opportunity to learn and grow. “Stressful” or “traumatic” events themselves don't have
much predictive power when it comes to life outcomes.
does not predict later functioning,” Bonanno said. only predictive if there's a negative
response.” In other words, living through adversity doesn't guarantee that you'll suffer going

forward.

The good news is that positive perception can be taught.
easily hurt by how we think about things,Bonanno said. In research at Columbia, the
neuroscientist Kevin Ochsner has shown that teaching people to think of adversity in different
ways--to reframe it in positive terms when the initial response is negative, or in a less emotional
way when the initial response is emotionally “hot”---changes how they experience and react to
the adversity.

(1)According to the passage, resilience is an individual's ability________.

A. to think critically B. to decide one's own fate

C. to live a better life D. to recover from adversity

(2)What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. The psychologists B. The resilient children

C. Positive elements D. Internal locus of control

(3)According to Paragraph 4, we can learn that____________.

A. your positive perception may turn adversity around B. stressful events are more
predictive than delightful events

C. experiencing adversity predicts that you will go on suffering D. a negative response
doesn't guarantee you will suffer all the time

(4)What is the author's purpose of writing this passage?

A. To teach people how to be resilient B. To encourage people to live through adversity

C. To indicate people's perception varies from each other D. To compare different research
findings about resilience

【解析】【分析】这是一篇介绍说明类文章。文章介绍了一种品质: 韧性(resilience)。
文章介绍了什么是韧性,韧性的作用,如何培养韧性等内容。

(1)推理判断题。由第二段中的“People who are lucky enough to never experience any sort
of adversity (逆境) won't know how resilient they are. It's only when they're faced with obstacles,
stress, and other environmental threats that resilience, or the lack of it, comes out. Some give in

The resilient children had what psychologists call an
“internal lens of control(内控点)”. They believed that they, and not their circumstances, affected
their achievements. The resilient children saw themselves as the arrangers of their own fates.”可< br>知,那些有韧性的孩子拥有所谓的“内控点”。他们认为他们影响了自己的成就,而不是他

此可知 ,they指的就是the resilient children。故答案选B。

(3)推理判断题。由第四段中的“He found that some people are far better than others at
dealing with adversity. This difference might come from perception(认知) whether they think of
an event as traumatic(创伤), or as an opportunity to learn and grow.”

The next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) may be sitting right beneath you, at least if
furniture maker Ikea has any say in the matter. The Swedish furniture company's “future-living”
research lab in Copenhagen is conducting a survey to understand what people want when it
comes to smart furniture.

AI is now walking into more aspects of people's daily lives. Self-driving cars are just around the

corner, and AI robots can play and beat the best players of strategy games. As smart home
technologies have become more ubiquitous, products ranging from smart electrical outlets(插
座)to smart smoke alarms are flooding the market. Therefore, it's not surprising that Ikea would
be moving in the same direction.

Exactly why people would want their sofa or bed frame to speak to then, track their daily
movements or offer help is not yet clear. Though Ikea's the new survey doesn't directly answer
that question, it does provide a hint of what people would feel comfortable with. Most
participants wanted a more human0like form of virtual(虚拟的)assistants, as opposed to one
that is more robotic. In terms of the ideal gender(性别)of the assistants, the most popular
choice was neither male nor female. Few wanted a religious form of AI.

Just as with human friends, most wanted AI friends that were like them, affirming their own
worldview. They wanted an AI assistant that was reasonably intelligent-that could collect data to
predict what a person wanted before he or she asked, and that could prevent someone from
making mistakes.

This is not the first time that Ikea has set foot in the field or futuristic technologies. In addition
to wireless charging tables and chainless bikes that never rust(生锈), the furniture giant has
also pictured smart kitchens that can cook the best meal. To decide on how intelligent you want
your next sofa or bookshelf to be, you can take Ikea's survey online.

(1)What does the underlined word

A. Beautiful. B. Common. C. Normal. D. Environment.

(2)What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

A. The differences between robot-like and human-like assistants. B. What form of AI
assistants people want.

C. What kind of friends people want. D. The popular robots on the market.

(3)Most people who received the survey wanted an AI assistant that could ________.

A. help them became smarter B. communicate with them without troubles

C. have its own worldview D. deal with their problems in advance

(4)Which of the following products are from Ikea?

A. Smart sofas that can speak to you. B. Smart beds than can track your daily movements.

C. Wireless charging cars. D. Rustless bikes without chains.

【答案】(1)B

(2)B

religious form of AI.”可知第三段主要讲了人们想要什么样的人工智能助手,故选B。

(3)考查推理判断。根据第四段中的“They wanted an AI assistant that was reasonably
intelligent-that could collect data to predict what a person wanted before he or she asked, and
that could prevent someone from making mistakes.”可知收到调查的大多数人都想要一款可以提前解决问题的人工智能助手,故选D。

(4)考查细节理解。根据最后一段中的“In addition to wireless charging tables and chainless
bikes that never rust(生锈), the furniture giant has also pictured smart kitchens that can cook
the best meal.”可知没有链条的不生锈自行车是来自于Ikea的产品,故案选D。

America is well known for being a melting pot of different ethnic groups and cultures, but
nowhere is this diversity more pronounced than in Queens, New York.

Here, second-generation Puerto Ricans live alongside third-generation Greeks and first-
generation Koreans, all united by a common feeling of pride in their American identity. However,
they are also proud and curious about their ancestral roots. National Geographic's Genographic
Project, also known as the Human Family Tree, set out to trace the origins by examining their
genetic makeup using a simple DNA test. What interested them more was something that
intrigues us all: the history of our recent ancestry. One recurring theme among immigrants seems
to be the hard work and sacrifices that went into building a new life, and how their descendants
now feel a duty to honor that effort by working hard too. Here is one Queens resident's story.

Richard, 38

My great-grandfather Tomas came to America from Poland when he was fifteen. His mother
had died, and his father remarried. Tomas didn't like his stepmother, so he ran away to Belgium,
where he boarded a ship to America—without a ticket. Arriving in America with nothing, he got a
job on the railroads in California. Then one day he saw an announcement in a newspaper that
was read by immigrants. It was from his brother in New York who was also seeking his fortune in
America and was looking for him. Tomas got in touch and they had an emotional reunion in New
York, where Tomas subsequently settled. This is the story that my grandmother has passed down
to us, to my parents, and all my aunts and uncles. She is an amazing woman and I suppose: the
one who holds us all together. She's actually quite forgetful now, but she never forgets family
details. What that has meant is that all of us have a strong family bond and a strong sense of
belonging to a group that has struggled and fought together to steered here.

(1)What is special about Queens?

A. Conflicting ethnic minorities live here.

B. Many foreigners like to travel to this place.

C. The pronunciation varies from person to person.

D. Many different people and cultures are gathering here.

(2)What does the

(3)Which of the following can best describe Tomas?

A. Brave and independent. B. Tough and honest.

C. Talented and persistent. D. Kind and hard-working.

(4)What can we know about the immigrants from the text?

A. They are ashamed of their roots.

Even a small increase in light activity such as washing dishes, or walking around the house
might help prevent an early death among older adults, researchers say.

(强

is beneficial,

Published in the BMJ, the latest research was based on a review of eight studies involving a
total of more than 36,000 people with an average age of almost 63 years. Participants were
followed for five to six years; 2,149 deaths were recorded. All of the studies involved monitoring

the physical activity of individuals who had activity trackers, and the studies did not rely on self-
reporting, which, the experts noted, could be unreliable.

For each study participants were split into four equal-sized groups, based on the total amount
of time spent actively, and the risk of death assessed, taking into account factors such as age, sex,
body mass index, and socioeconomic status. This was then repeated for an amount of activity at
different levels of intensity. The results were analyzed together to give an overview. The team
found a greater amount of activity was linked to a lower risk of death. The results held for
different intensities of activity. The team said the study supported the message
more and more often

However, the study had limitations. It only looked at the situation for middle age and older
adults, most of whom lived in the US or Europe, and some of the effect could be due to those
people with a higher risk of death being less likely to be related to physical activity. Physical
activity levels also were only measured over one period of time.

Dr Gavin Sandercock, from the University of Essex, said the results suggested moving more
brought bigger benefits than simply reducing the time of sitting, another factor measured in the
study.

Sleep, considered a luxury by many, is essential for a person's wellbeing. Researchers have
found that insufficient sleep increases a person's risk of developing severe medical conditions,
such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Now, a new study by Boston's
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has found that getting sufficient sleep is also the key
to improving academic performance.

Jeffrey Grossman, who led the research, was not trying to find the link between sleep and
grades when he handed out Fitbits to the 100 students in his introduction to Solid-State
Chemistry class. Instead, the professor of Computational Materials Science hoped the popular
wrist-worn device which, tracks a person's activity 247, would show a connection between
physical exercise and academic achievement.

However, the study, published in the journal “Science Learning” on October 1, 2019, discovered
a surprising insight. Then was a straight-line relationship between the average amount of sleep a
student got and hisher grade on the 11 quizzes, three midterms, and the final exam
administered during the semester.

Even more interesting, it was also not sufficient for students to just head to bed early the night
before a test. Instead, it's the sleep you get during the days when learning is happening that
matters most.

The time students went to bed each night was similarly important. Those who went to bed in
the early hours of the morning performed poorly, even if the total sleep time was the same as a
higher - performing student. “When you go to bed matters. Grossman says. If you go to bed after
2, your performance starts to go down even if you get the same seven hours. So, quantity isn't

A call came into Jimmy Gilleece's bar. A newly married woman, who had spent the afternoon at
his bar, couldn't find her wallet. She didn't care about her ID, credit cards, or 150 in cash-but her
wedding ring was inside.

Gilleece, 42, didn't like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he determined
to find the wallet. He spent hours on videos from surveillance (监控) cameras, watching the

woman's every step in the bar. Within minutes, a young man approached the bar, put something
in his pocket, and walked off.

Gilleece posted a clip (视频片段) on the bar's Facebook page to find out who the young man
was. Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather, who said he'd done it
because he hadn't eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took
the money and threw the wallet into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.

Gilleece told the teen to meet him at the docks (码头). There they talked a lot and Gilleece
knew that Prather was from a poor family. Seeing the teenager's small build, Gilleece thought he
was more of a kid than a criminal. However, because of the missing ring, Prather could be put
into prison.

Gilleece decided to help the kid. He hired two local divers to search the waters where the
wallet had been thrown. More than an hour passed, with no sign of the ring. Gilleece grew
worried. And then a diver popped up. In his hand was the wallet, and inside was the ring. When

Emoji might not be your first choice of communication in a disaster, but researchers feel they
could make a difference during emergencies, where every second counts. Now, the Emoji-quake
campaign is lobbying for an earthquake emoji to be added to the Unicode set — the standard
group of icons available on digital devices worldwide. The campaign aims to find an earthquake-
appropriate design to be submitted to Unicode.

up to one third of the world's population are exposed to earthquakes,
explains University of Southampton seismologist (地震学家) Dr. Stephen Hicks, a founder of the
campaign. we really want to be able to communicate to all of those regions, all of those
different languages, and an emoji is an amazing way of doing that.

Unlike many other weather and climate related events, where longer warning times or visible
signs are available, earthquakes move incredibly quickly and are difficult to measure while they
are still occurring. Populations in areas like Japan and Mexico are dependent on earthquake early
warning technology, which issues an alert on digital devices and broadcast media.
seconds to get under a table or to protect yourself,
many cases. Naturally you don't want too much wording in the warning message.

Pictographs (象形文字) and other visuals like emoji have a track record of being faster and
easier to understand than written information. Dr. Sara McBride, a communications specialist,
who is also part of the campaign, told BBC News, can cross the boundaries of written
languages, helping communicate valuable information to people who may struggle to read a
certain language.

The potential usefulness of emoji in emergencies could extend well beyond earthquakes. A
team of designers also came up with emerji—an entire set of emoji dedicated to climate and
environmental events.

(1)According to the passage, why did the campaign choose earthquakes as their target?

A. Because earthquakes threaten many people in different regions. B. Because earthquakes
are the easiest to be expressed by an emoji.

C. Because earthquakes are not difficult to measure while occurring. D. Because earthquakes
are the most destructive disasters in the world.

(2)Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase forin the first
paragraph?

A. Hope for. B. Enter for. C. Appeal for. D. Run for.

(3)What can we infer from Dr. Sara McBride's words about emoji?

A. Emoji benefits people with reading disability a lot. B. Emoji is being used to convey
valuable information.

C. Emoji can cross the boundaries of written languages. D. Emoji is a universal language and

helpful tool in communication.

(4)The best title of the passage should be ___________________.

A. Could an emoji save our life? B. What can emoji do in our life?

C. How is emoji changing our life? D. Do we really know about emoji?

possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns (实习生) in meaningful part-

20.阅读理解

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity. According to a government
white paper, TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world.

Westerners' understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and
massage(针灸,拔罐和按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on U. S. swimmer
Michael Phelps, back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain
became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016.

As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and
keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is
therefore disheartening to know that while 103 World Health Organization member countries
have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine.
TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs.

Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and
quantity, and the processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly determine the effectiveness of
the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production
processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition
and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately,
standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories
producing patented TCM drugs.

Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of
creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year,
TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the
past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her
research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM
industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time.

(1)Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps?

A. Because he was injured in his swimming. B. Because cupping is a kind of important TCM
treatment.

C. Because westerners know a little about TCM. D. Because westerners attach great
importance to TCM.

(2)Why don't some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine?

A. Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases. B. Because they only approve the practice
of acupuncture.

C. Because Western medicine is more effective. D. Because medicine made out of Chinese
herbs develops slowly.

(3)Compared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 4?

A. The methods of planting herbs. B. The effectiveness of prescription.

C. Lacking in standardization. D. Its stable functions.

(4)The lack of creativity in TCM refers to the fact that ________.

A. medicine-making companies lack creativity B. prescriptions are got from the past

C. Western companies are more experienced D. medicine-making companies lack driving
force

【答案】(1)C
