Norman Garmezy, a
development psychologist at the University of
Minnesota, met thousands
of children in his
four decades of research. A nine-year-old boy in

mother and an absent father. But each day he would
walk in to school with a
smile on his face. He
wanted to make sure that

identified as “resilience”.
Resilience
presents a challenge for psychologists. People who
are lucky enough to never
experience any sort
of adversity (逆境) won't know how resilient they
are. It's only when they're
faced with
obstacles, stress, and other environmental threats
that resilience, or the lack of it,
comes out.
Some give in and some conquer.
Garmezy's work opened the door to the study of the
elements that could enable an individual's
success despite the challenges they faced. His
research indicated that some elements had to do
with luck, but quite large set of elements was
psychological, and had to do with how the children
responded to the environment. The resilient
children had what psychologists call an “internal
lens of control(内控点)”. They believed that
they, and not their circumstances, affected their
achievements. The resilient children saw
themselves as the arrangers of their own
fates.
Ceorge Bonanno has been
studying resilience for years at Columbia
University's Teachers
College. He found that
some people are far better than others at dealing
with adversity. This
difference might come
from perception(认知) whether they think of an event
as traumatic(创伤),
or as an opportunity to
learn and grow. “Stressful” or “traumatic” events
themselves don't have
much predictive power
when it comes to life outcomes.

other words, living through adversity doesn't
guarantee that you'll suffer going
forward.
The good news is

research at Columbia, the
neuroscientist Kevin

adversity in different
ways--to reframe it in
positive terms when the initial response is
negative, or in a less emotional
way when the
initial response is emotionally “hot”---changes
how they experience and react to

【解析】【分析】这是一篇介绍说明类文章。文章介绍了一种品质:
韧性(resilience)。
文章介绍了什么是韧性,韧性的作用,如何培养韧性等内容。
(1)推理判断题。由第二段中的“People who are lucky enough to
never experience any sort

won't know how resilient they are. It's only when
they're faced with obstacles,
stress, and
other environmental threats that resilience, or

人成功度过了逆境。
由此可知,那些成功度过逆境的人属于非常有韧性的人。韧性应该指
克服逆境的能力。故答案选D。
(2)词义猜测题。由第三段中的“The resilient children had
what psychologists call an
“internal lens of

their
achievements. The resilient children saw
themselves as the arrangers of their own fates.”可<

的环境影响了他们的成就。这些有韧性的孩子将自己看作是自己命运的主宰者。由
此可知
,they指的就是the resilient children。故答案选B。
(3)推理判断题。由第四段中的“He found that some people are
far better than others at
dealing with
adversity. This difference might come from
perception(认知) whether they think of
an event
as traumatic(创伤), or as an opportunity to learn
and grow.”
Garm

The next generation of
artificial intelligence (AI) may be sitting right
beneath you, at least if
furniture maker Ikea
has any say in the matter. The Swedish furniture
company's “future-living”
research lab in
Copenhagen is conducting a survey to understand
what people want when it
comes to smart
furniture.
AI is now walking into more
aspects of people's daily lives. Self-driving cars
are just around the
corner, and AI
robots can play and beat the best players of
strategy games. As smart home
technologies
have become more ubiquitous, products ranging from
smart electrical outlets(插

alarms are flooding the market. Therefore, it's
not surprising that Ikea would
be moving in
the same direction.
Exactly why people
would want their sofa or bed frame to speak to
then, track their daily
movements or offer
help is not yet clear. Though Ikea's the new
survey doesn't directly answer
that question,
it does provide a hint of what people would feel
comfortable with. Most
participants wanted a
more human0like form of virtual(虚拟的)assistants, as
opposed to one
that is more robotic. In terms
of the ideal gender(性别)of the assistants, the most
popular
choice was neither male nor female.
Few wanted a religious form of AI.
Just as with human friends, most wanted AI friends
that were like them, affirming their own
worldview. They wanted an AI assistant that
was reasonably intelligent-that could collect data
to
predict what a person wanted before he or
she asked, and that could prevent someone from
making mistakes.
This is not the
first time that Ikea has set foot in the field or
futuristic technologies. In addition
to
wireless charging tables and chainless bikes that
never rust(生锈), the furniture giant has
also
pictured smart kitchens that can cook the best
meal. To decide on how intelligent you want
your next sofa or bookshelf to be, you can
take Ikea's survey online.
(1)What does
the underlined word
A. Beautiful.
B. Common. C. Normal.
D. Environment.
(2)What does Paragraph 3

A. The
differences between robot-like and human-like

C. What kind

(3)Most
people who received the survey wanted an AI
assistant that could ________.
A. help them became smarter
B. communicate with them without troubles
C. have its own worldview
D. deal with their problems in advance
(4)Which of the following products are from

America is well
known for being a melting pot of different ethnic
groups and cultures, but
nowhere is this
diversity more pronounced than in Queens, New
York.
Here, second-generation Puerto
Ricans live alongside third-generation Greeks and
first-
generation Koreans, all united by a
common feeling of pride in their American
identity. However,
they are also proud and
curious about their ancestral roots. National
Geographic's Genographic

as the Human Family Tree, set out to trace the
origins by examining their

using a simple DNA test. What interested them more
was something that
intrigues us all: the
history of our recent ancestry. One recurring
theme among immigrants seems
to be the hard
work and sacrifices that went into building a new
life, and how their descendants
now feel a
duty to honor that effort by working hard too.
Here is one Queens resident's story.
Richard, 38
My great-grandfather Tomas
came to America from Poland when he was fifteen.
His mother
had died, and his father remarried.
Tomas didn't like his stepmother, so he ran away
to Belgium,
where he boarded a ship to
America—without a ticket. Arriving in America with
nothing, he got a
job on the railroads in
California. Then one day he saw an announcement in
a newspaper that
was read by immigrants. It
was from his brother in New York who was also
seeking his fortune in
America and was looking
for him. Tomas got in touch and they had an
emotional reunion in New
York, where Tomas
subsequently settled. This is the story that my
grandmother has passed down
to us, to my
parents, and all my aunts and uncles. She is an
amazing woman and I suppose: the
one who holds
us all together. She's actually quite forgetful
now, but she never forgets family
details.
What that has meant is that all of us have a
strong family bond and a strong sense of
belonging to a group that has struggled and
fought together to steered here.

Even a small increase in light activity such as

Published in the BMJ, the latest research was
based on a review of eight studies involving a
total of more than 36,000 people with an
average age of almost 63 years. Participants were
followed for five to six years; 2,149 deaths
were recorded. All of the studies involved
monitoring
the physical activity of
individuals who had activity trackers, and the
studies did not rely on self-
reporting, which,
the experts noted, could be unreliable.
For each study participants were split into four
equal-sized groups, based on the total amount
of time spent actively, and the risk of death
assessed, taking into account factors such as age,
sex,
body mass index, and socioeconomic
status. This was then repeated for an amount of
activity at
different levels of intensity. The
results were analyzed together to give an
overview. The team
found a greater amount of
activity was linked to a lower risk of death. The
results held for
different intensities of
activity. The team said the study supported the

However, the study had limitations. It only looked
at the situation for middle age and older
adults, most of whom lived in the US or
Europe, and some of the effect could be due to
those
people with a higher risk of death being
less likely to be related to physical activity.
Physical
activity levels also were only
measured over one period of time.
Dr
Gavin Sandercock, from the University of Essex,
said the results suggested moving more

Sleep, considered a luxury by many, is
essential for a person's wellbeing. Researchers
have
found that insufficient sleep increases a
person's risk of developing severe medical
conditions,
such as obesity, diabetes, and
cardiovascular diseases. Now, a new study by
Boston's
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT) has found that getting sufficient sleep is
also the key
to improving academic
performance.
Jeffrey Grossman, who led
the research, was not trying to find the link
between sleep and
grades when he handed out
Fitbits to the 100 students in his introduction to
Solid-State
Chemistry class. Instead, the
professor of Computational Materials Science hoped
the popular
wrist-worn device which, tracks a
person's activity 247, would show a connection
between
physical exercise and academic
achievement.
However, the study,
published in the journal “Science Learning” on
October 1, 2019, discovered
a surprising
insight. Then was a straight-line relationship
between the average amount of sleep a
student
got and hisher grade on the 11 quizzes, three
midterms, and the final exam
administered
during the semester.
Even more
interesting, it was also not sufficient for
students to just head to bed early the night
before a test. Instead, it's the sleep you get
during the days when learning is happening that
matters most.
The time students
went to bed each night was similarly important.
Those who went to bed in
the early hours of
the morning performed poorly, even if the total
sleep time was the same as a
higher -
performing student. “When you go to bed matters.
Grossman says. If you go to bed after
2, your
performance starts to go down even if you get the
same seven hours. So, quantity isn't
everything.”

A call came
into Jimmy Gilleece's bar. A newly married woman,
who had spent the afternoon at
his bar,
couldn't find her wallet. She didn't care about
her ID, credit cards, or 150 in cash-but her
wedding ring was inside.
Gilleece,
42, didn't like the idea that a theft could have
occurred at his place. So he determined
to
find the wallet. He spent hours on videos from
surveillance (监控) cameras, watching the
woman's every step in the bar. Within
minutes, a young man approached the bar, put
something
in his pocket, and walked off.
Gilleece posted a clip (视频片段) on the bar's
Facebook page to find out who the young man
was. Within hours, Gilleece got a text from
17-year-old Rivers Prather, who said he'd done it
because he hadn't eaten in two days. He said
he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he
took
the money and threw the wallet into the
ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.
Gilleece told the teen to meet him at the docks
(码头). There they talked a lot and Gilleece
knew that Prather was from a poor family.
Seeing the teenager's small build, Gilleece
thought he
was more of a kid than a criminal.
However, because of the missing ring, Prather
could be put
into prison.
Gilleece
decided to help the kid. He hired two local divers
to search the waters where the
wallet had been
thrown. More than an hour passed, with no sign of
the ring. Gilleece grew
worried. And then a
diver popped up. In his hand was the wallet, and
inside was the ring. When
Gilleece called the
wallet's owner, she burst into tears and
immediately dropped the charge
against Prather
for stealing the ring.
(1)What did the
woman value most in her wallet?
ID.
credit cards.
money.
wedding ring.
(2)What did
Prather do after getting the wallet?
kept the ring.
spent the money
in it.
threw it in a dustbin.

(3)Why did
Gilleece help Prather?
teach
the child a lesson.
meet the customer's

20.阅读理解
Traditional Chinese
medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity.
According to a government
white paper, TCM has
been introduced in 183 countries and regions
around the world.
Westerners'
understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to
acupuncture, cupping and
massage(针灸,拔罐和按摩).
For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left
on U. S. swimmer
Michael Phelps,back from
cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles
and reducing pain
became the center of
attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016.
As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a
more important role in getting rid of diseases and
keeping the body in good condition in the TCM
treatment system than physical treatment. It is
therefore disheartening to know that while 103
World Health Organization member countries
have given approval to the practice of
acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal
medicine.
TCM falls far behind Western
medicine owing partly to the slow development of
Chinese herbs.
Herbs are made into
pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs
used, their quality and
quantity, and the
processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly
determine the effectiveness of
the
prescription. Compared with Western medicine,
which has standardized drug production
processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks
standardization, with the chemical composition
and functions of its medicines being unclear
and their effects being unstable. Fortunately,
standardization has improved in recent
decades, with an increasing number of factories
producing patented TCM drugs.
Another factor that has prevented the development
of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of
creativity. While Western medicine-making
companies come up with new products every year,
TCM drug producers tend to make medicines
according to prescriptions handed down from the
past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the
2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her
research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive
creativity to some extent in China's TCM
industry. However, the current state of
affairs cannot be changed within a short time.
(1)Why does the author mention the example of
Michael Phelps?
A. Because he
was injured in his swimming. B. Because
cupping is a kind of important TCM
treatment.
C. Because westerners know
a little about TCM. D. Because westerners
attach great
importance to TCM.
(2)Why
don't some member countries of WHO recognize
Chinese herbal medicine?
A.
Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases.
B. Because they only approve the practice
of
acupuncture.
C. Because Western medicine
is more effective. D. Because medicine
made out of Chinese
herbs develops slowly.
(3)Compared with Western medicine, what
is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 4?
A. The methods of planting herbs.
B. The effectiveness of prescription.
C.
Lacking in standardization.
D. Its stable functions.
(4)The lack of
creativity in TCM refers to the fact that
________.
A. medicine-making
companies lack creativity B. prescriptions
are got from the past
C. Western companies
are more experienced D. medicine-making
companies lack driving
force
