2.阅读理解

It's hard to turn down a tasty banana. They taste good and you don't have to wash them before
eating them. However, British scientists say that the fruit may disappear by 2050.

One reason for this is climate(气候) change. Scientists at the University of Exeter collected
data(数据) from 27 countries and regions that produce 86 percent of the world's bananas.
They found that climate change has improved growing conditions in 21 of these countries. In the
past 60 years, the average yield(平均产量) has reached 1.37 tons of bananas per hectare(公
顷).

However, if temperatures keep rising, this advantage will disappear. Ten of the countries,
including India, the world's biggest producer of bananas, will produce fewer bananas. By 2050,
the fruit may die out.

Shouldn't bananas grow more easily if it's hotter outside? In fact, the perfect temperature
range for growing bananas is between 24 and 32 C. If temperatures get too high, they will stop
growing.

Diseases are another danger to bananas. Unlike other crops, the bananas we grow come from
shoot cuttings(茎段) rather than seeds. This means that all banana plants have the same
genotype(基因型). In other words, if a disease is able to kill one plant, it could kill them all.

One serious disease is called Panama. Caused by fungus(真菌) in the soil, it spreads easily. It
has spread across South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. If one banana plantation(种
植园) suffers from the disease, it will take 30 years until it is able to grow bananas again.
Scientists have yet to find a cure for this disease.

(2)What might happen if temperatures keep going higher?

A. More countries will start to grow bananas.

B. Bananas will grow better in most countries.

C. Bananas will not be able to grow any more.

D. Bananas won't be as tasty as before.

(3)What does Paragraph 5 tell us?

Schools in the UK are cutting time spent on PE lessons because of exam pressures. Secondary
school teachers said that older teenagers were especially likely to miss out, because the time
spent on physical education for 14-16 -year-olds had fallen in the past five years.

physical education because of exam pressures is worrying. Schools that value health also do

Why does the sky change colors?

What is the sky? How high is it? What color is it? What birds can live above it? These questions
are difficult to answer, aren't they?

In fact, the sky has no color. Then why does the sky look blue?

We know that there is air around the world. When planes fly, they need air to lift their wings.
Planes can't fly very high. That is because the air gets thinner when they go higher. The same will
happen to us if we go high enough. If we go up about 1, 200 kilometers from the earth, we'll find
no air there. Some birds can fly into the sky as high as a plane, but they cannot fly or live without
air.

Looking up above us, you will see the blue sky with white clouds. It is usually light blue. The
color would be bluer when you see on the top of a high mountain. And you will see fewer clouds
in the sky between you and the sun.

Sometimes the sky doesn't look blue. When the sun rises and falls, you will see red, orange,
and other colors in the sky. Such are the most beautiful moments of the day.

Who can see the colors of the sky high above the earth? The astronauts! They can see those
beautiful colors of the sky from the outer space. However, before flying into outer space, they sit
in a spaceship high above the earth, and there is no air at all. The sky would be that dark and its
color would be black.

Now you may understand that we see colors because the air scatters(使散射) the sunlight.
light travels through the air. Without air, there would be no light or colors.

(1)Planes can't fly as high as possible because_________.

A. more air B. the bluer sky C. more colors D. more clouds

A. 6: 00 a. m. B. 10: 00 a. m. C. 1: 00 p. m. D. 2: 00 p. m.

planets which hit into Earth.

However, by studying a special rock, he discovered that it acted like a sponge(海绵). This
suggested that Earth's water might have come from inside, driven to the surface to form the
oceans, by geological activity.

Lots of people are afraid of speaking in public. According to a study, there are 3 of every 4
people having such a problem. The conclusion is a bit surprising and worrying, as most jobs
require some speaking ability. The following will help you to make a speech better.

Write note cards. Write main ideas on your cards. You needn't write details. Just put in some
fun facts, questions, and other activities on the cards to share with the class. You needn't look at
your cards for a long time while speaking. Only have a quick look at the card for information
instead of reading every last word if necessary.

Smile at your class. When it's time to speak, a good old-fashioned smile is the best to draw
your class into your speech. Be happy, because you're about to teach your class something they
don't know before. Studies have shown that smiles are infectious. That means once you smile, it's
hard for everyone else not to smile. So if you want your speech to go off well, smile. That will
make everyone smile and maybe those smiles will make you actually smile.

Make eyes contact. It's so boring to listen to a speaker who looks at the floor or at note cards.
Relax. Your class is made up of your friends and you talk to them all the time. Talk the same way
now. Have a look at every person in the classroom at least once. That way, everyone will feel like
you're communicating with them. Also, you'll look like you know what you are talking about.

Use hand motions. Move you hand along as you talk, using them to express your key points and
keep the class interested. It will also lead your nervous energy into a better place.
