(英语)英语阅读理解练习题及解析

一、高中英语阅读理解
1.阅读理解

When it comes to gifts, it's not easy to shop for someone when you're not sure what they're
into. Thankfully, Crate and Barrel's sister store — the modern, fancy version — CB2 has a gift
collection that is just as beautiful as it is practical. They're known for their modern designs. We've
edited a list of some of our favorite gift ideas from CB2 so you'll know just what to get.

Galactic Jewelry Box ($$21)

This jewelry box is not only a place to store your jewels, but it looks like one itself. “Designed by
UK-based Seascape Curiosities, the jewelry box brings deep space to your room. Open storage
space lined with light grey cotton velvet holds most-precious possessions,” CB2 states. The best
part? It's under $$25.

Flamingo Catchall ($$29.95)

Designed by the British fashion designer Matthew Williamson, this flamingo catchall is a pop of
color in every room and offers a secure place to store some of your favorite rings, earrings, or
little items. Not only is it an awesome addition to just about any home, it's also a great
conversation starter at dinner parties.

Heritage Navy Leather Activity Ball ($$49)

It's a great gift for the man in your life who loves sports. Crafted with design and function in
mind, handmade activity ball (think of it as a smaller basketball) stands up to years of play and
even gets better looking with age. It's a super addition to any bookshelf.

Black Nickel Cocktail Shaker ($$24.95)

This cocktail shaker starts off with a smoky black finish and fades into grey. It's fashionable,
functional, and — above all — easy to clean.

(1)Which of the following gifts would you like to choose if your brother loves football?

A. Galactic Jewelry Box. B. Flamingo Catchall.

C. Heritage Navy Leather Activity Ball. D. Black Nickel Cocktail Shaker.

A. Galactic Jewelry Box is easy to clean. B. Flamingo Catchall can inspire people to start a
topic.

C. Made by hand, Leather Activity Ball is fragile. D. Black Nickel Cocktail Shaker is the
cheapest.

2.阅读理解

Given the recent interest in green buildings in the media, let's think differently. Instead of
focusing on increasing the supply of energy, what if we focus on reducing demand?

Can we start with ending the open-door practice of street-front shops? While cool air from
these shops is refreshing to pedestrians, it carries a cost. Energy is used in the air conditioning
process.

So it must be possible to look for changes in regulations that would encourage more energy-
saving designs. For instance, if we fix ceiling fans, air-conditioning homes could surely be avoided
for part of the year. Ceiling fans use far less energy. They were in a year air conditioners could
stay if ceiling fans were fixed.

In homes built under the small- house policy in New Territories, the ceiling may be too low for
ceiling fans. If the 9-meter maximum building height regulation were relaxed, ceiling fans could
be fixed to reduce energy use. Current thinking in sustainable building design and operation
involves integrated(协调统一的) design, that is, bring together all parties to create a building
with better performance that achieves energy reduction.

For integrated design to succeed, all parties must come together and think beyond each
person's circle of influence. Better solutions are impossible to avoid with integrated design.
Buildings would no longer be engineered after the basic architecture was built. Positive project
outcomes may include reduced air-conditioning load, reduced power use for electric lighting, and
a reduction in the amount of materials used.

We need to ask if we are ready to look beyond our own small circles and seek an improved
approach to building design. By that I mean an integrated design resulting in more sustainable
buildings.

(1)What's the author's attitude towards the open-door practice of the street shops?

A. Supportive. B. Disapproving. C. Optimistic. D. Uncaring.

(2)Why does the author suggest fixing ceiling fans?

A. To follow an old practice. B. To help reduce energy use.

C. To completely replace air conditioners. D. To help cut down on daily expenses.

(3)What's the key to making sustainable buildings a reality?

A. All parties should get started at the same time. B. The basic architecture should be
finished first.

C. Proper design and performance to achieve energy reduction. D. Seeking the small-house
policy and some successful architects.

(4)What would be the best title for the text?

A. Waste less, live better B. Goodbye, air conditioning

C. How to reduce the energy cost D. Green buildings call for integrated design

【答案】(1)B

(2)B

(3)C

(4)D

Can we start with ending the open-door practice of street-front
shops? While cool air from these shops is refreshing to pedestrians, it carries a cost. Energy is
used in the air conditioning process.可知,作者认为虽然这些商店的凉爽空气给行人提神,
但open-door pra ctice却带来了成本,在空调降低温度过程中消耗了能量。可知是持不赞成
的态度的。故答案选B项 。

(2)细节理解题。根据第三段if we fix ceiling fans, air-conditioning homes could surely be
avoided for part of the year. Ceiling fans use far less energy.

(Pos itive project outcomes may include reduced air- conditioning load, reduced power
use for electric lighting, and a reduction in the amount of materials used.

或光看文章的某一些段落,而应该观察全 文的结构安排;理解文章浓墨重笔写的“重心”;
考虑文章的组织材料及支撑性细节是服务于什么的;分 析故事的发展结局都是围绕什么内
容来表达中心的;最后用简明扼要的文字将文章的中心思想表达出来。

When was the last time you told someone they inspire you to go to work each morning?

Teachers at Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Missouri, did just that this September, when
they pulled individual students out of class to tell them just how much they appreciated them.

The students' reactions, which were captured (捕捉) on video and shared on YouTube in a now-
viral video, ranged from shy thanks to hugs and tears.

“I have been challenged to find a student who makes me want to come to school every day,”
says one teacher in the video, “and that's you.”

Jamie McSparin, a teacher in charge of the school's academy program for at-risk sophomores
(二年级学生)and juniors, posed the challenge, writes ABC News.

“Initially when we pulled the kids out, they all thought they were in trouble,” McSparin told
ABC News. “Any teacher-student interaction always seems to be negative (消极的), and that was
something that bothered me, too. No matter if they're a good kid or a trouble maker or anything,
they always thought they were in trouble,” she says.

McSparin says she got the idea for the project after attending a professional development
workshop this summer called the power of positivity.

“I like the idea of letting students know they are appreciated, because we do appreciate them, I
just don't think we say it enough,” she told local news outlet WDAF-TV.

It's safe to say the challenge was effective.

“I feel special,” said one of the boys in the video. “You should,” said his teacher. “You are
special.”

(1)What does the underlined word “posed” in Paragraph 5 mean?

A. Presented. B. Rejected. C. Ignored. D. Evaluated.

(2)How did the students probably feel when pulled out of the classroom at first?

(3)What inspired McSparin to challenge the project?

A. The trouble caused by students. B. The need of shooting the video.

C. A seminar named the power of positivity. D. A program related to students' interactions.

(4)What message does this text mainly convey?

A. Challenge is unavoidable in life. B. Everyone needs to be appreciated.

C. Positivity outweighs negativity. D. News media contribute to students' progress.

4.阅读理解

Weaving hammocks is an art that takes a sharp eye, a skilled hand and lots of patience. But in
Lenwood Haddock's case, being blind works to his advantage. His trained, sensitive hands are
acutely aware of every step of the process. Since beginning his craft in 1986, Lenwood has woven
about 145, 000 perfect hammocks.

Lenwood lost his sight in 1973, at age 18, during a hunting accident. “My whole working career
has been blind,” he says. He first found a job as a woodworker, but when that organization closed,
the North Carolina Division of Services for the Blind connected him with Hatteras Hammocks. On
his first day of work. “I did a total of one hammock,” Lenwood recalls, laughing. “And then I came
home and lay down to sleep. I lift weights, but I wasn't as tough as I thought until I started
takes a lot of energy, and you're standing up all day.”

In time, however, Lenwood found he had a knack (窍门) for the job. At first he worked on-site
at the company, but after a year Lenwood moved his operation to the home workshop where he
had worked for 10 years during his woodworking days.

There, he creates dozens of hammocks each week from ropes in a variety of sizes. One day, he
realized the step counter on his phone recorded him walking eight miles without ever leaving his
shop.

The process of weaving a hammock involves making and catching hundreds of loops (环). A
single missed stitch (织针) creates a hole that can widen and make the hammock uncomfortable
or even dangerous to use. Experienced weavers miss loops sometimes, but to his company's
knowledge, Lenwood has never turned in a hammock with even one dropped stitch. Lenwood's

skilled fingers are quick to catch and fix any mistakes.

The company has acquired other brands and changed its name to The Hammock Source. Today,
it is the world's largest maker and seller of hammocks, all built by hand.

However, Lenwood's routine has changed little. He works his fingers back and forth across the
rows, looping the rope and pulling it. With every hammock, Lenwood presents himself a perfect
product. “I'm not sure how sighted people do it,” he admits.

(1)Lenwood stopped doing his first job because .

A. it was for people with good eyesight only B. the company failed to go on with its business

C. the company didn't produce hammocks D. he was not skilled at doing woodwork

(2)It can be learned from the passage that Lenwood .

A. has been blind all through his life B. used to work as a hunter to support his family

C. was born in the 1950s with good eyesight D. has worked as a hammock weaver for 10
years

(3)What can we learn about Lenwood from the 4th paragraph?

A. He moved very often while he was working on a hammock. B. He had to make different
ropes before he wove a hammock.

C. He had to stay 8 miles away from the worksite to complete it. D. He needed ropes of
about 8 miles long to complete a hammock.

(4)What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. the success of the Hammock Source Company B. a blind craftsman who makes perfect
hammocks

C. how to weave perfect hammocks by hand D. how to become a successful craftsman

The next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) may be sitting right beneath you, at least if
furniture maker Ikea has any say in the matter. The Swedish furniture company's “future-living”
research lab in Copenhagen is conducting a survey to understand what people want when it
comes to smart furniture.

AI is now walking into more aspects of people's daily lives. Self-driving cars are just around the
corner, and AI robots can play and beat the best players of strategy games. As smart home
technologies have become more ubiquitous, products ranging from smart electrical outlets(插

座)to smart smoke alarms are flooding the market. Therefore, it's not surprising that Ikea would
be moving in the same direction.

Exactly why people would want their sofa or bed frame to speak to then, track their daily
movements or offer help is not yet clear. Though Ikea's the new survey doesn't directly answer
that question, it does provide a hint of what people would feel comfortable with. Most
participants wanted a more human0like form of virtual(虚拟的)assistants, as opposed to one
that is more robotic. In terms of the ideal gender(性别)of the assistants, the most popular
choice was neither male nor female. Few wanted a religious form of AI.

Just as with human friends, most wanted AI friends that were like them, affirming their own
worldview. They wanted an AI assistant that was reasonably intelligent-that could collect data to
predict what a person wanted before he or she asked, and that could prevent someone from
making mistakes.

This is not the first time that Ikea has set foot in the field or futuristic technologies. In addition
to wireless charging tables and chainless bikes that never rust(生锈), the furniture giant has
also pictured smart kitchens that can cook the best meal. To decide on how intelligent you want
your next sofa or bookshelf to be, you can take Ikea's survey online.

(1)What does the underlined word

A. Beautiful. B. Common. C. Normal. D. Environment.

(2)What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

A. The differences between robot-like and human-like assistants. B. What form of AI
assistants people want.

C. What kind of friends people want. D. The popular robots on the market.

(3)Most people who received the survey wanted an AI assistant that could ________.

A. help them became smarter B. communicate with them without troubles

C. have its own worldview D. deal with their problems in advance

(4)Which of the following products are from Ikea?

A. Smart sofas that can speak to you. B. Smart beds than can track your daily movements.

C. Wireless charging cars. D. Rustless bikes without chains.

【答案】(1)B

nations would share notes on what they had observed all over the grounds.

Twenty-seven years later, the press room has touch screens that allow us to watch live videos
from any court, and even go back to watch key moments in key matches long after they have
finished. You could cover Wimbledon without leaving your seat. But that is a bit like spending all
your time ordering room service and looking up fun facts on Wikipedia.

More than at any other tennis tournament, there is also an appetite for stories that deal with
the setting, the history and the traditions.

If they change the price of the fish tacos (鱼肉卷饼) at the United States Open, it's not a story.
If they change the price of the strawberries and cream, the signature treat at Wimbledon. It's
time to email your editor using capital letters.

The new retractable (可伸缩的) roof was put in place in 2009. Until then, you always had to
have a rainy-day story in your notebook because there were no guarantees any matches would be
played. Now tennis is a sure thing on Centre Court, which has made tennis reporters a bit less
creative. But at least it guarantees us daily access to the most atmospheric place in the sport.

So much has changed, but Centre Court remains true to its original spirit: more a theater than a
stadium. Catching that feeling is part of covering Wimbledon, too.

(1)What did the author do on the Crow's Nest in the past?

A. He made friends with reporters. B. He reported on tennis matches.

C. He appreciated the beautiful scenery. D. He exchanged experiences with tennis players.

(2)What does the author think of the new way of covering Wimbledon?

A. It lacks fun. B. It is expensive C. It is not convenient. D. It is not quick enough

(3)Why does the author mention strawberries and cream?

A. To compare popular foods. B. To introduce the typical treat at Wimbledon.

C. To describe people's craze for traditional dishes. D. To show the traditions of Wimbledon
are an attraction.

(4)What difference does the new roof make?

A. Audiences have easier access to a tennis court. B. There's less fun in watching Wimbledon
indoors.

C. Reporters are struggling to find original material. D. rainy-day stories about Wimbledon
have become history.

【答案】(1)B

(2)A

With fuel costs rising and airlines finding more fees to impose on travelers every day, airfare
isn't getting any cheaper. Since you can't drive to all your dream destinations, flying is the only
way to go sometimes and, undeniably, the fastest. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the
most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan
ahead.

Getting the best fare. Airlines put out their fare sales on Tuesday morning, making this day the
best day to book a flight for less.

Fly during the least popular times. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly,
which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early
morning flights, since many people don't like to get up before the sun to get to the airport. Earlier
boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting bumped on an
overbooked flight or delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues.

Choose your seat later. Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online,
adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost. If you show up early on your travel day,
you can still get suitable seats. Some of the best seats get held back until flight day, unless others
are willing to pay extra for them ahead of time, so you still have the chance at one of those.

Fly on holidays. You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, and even
though most other times are more affordable, the days surrounding holidays can be crazy. Save
big if you're willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Don't wait until the last- minute to book. Many travelers don't know that there's a sweet spot
for booking and getting the best price on your tickets. Book too early or too late and you could
end up paying more than you need to. The best time to book is between three months and six
weeks from when you want to travel.

Avoiding extra fees Airlines will charge for just about anything these days. Some have even
toyed around with charging customers for using the restroom. All those extra fees can certainly
add up, but there's no reason to pay them if you don't have to. Here are some tips to keep money
in your wallet once you get to the airport.

Avoid the upgrade it's not necessary. Sometimes upgrades are free, but mostly you will be
charged for seeking a last-minute bump to first class, and the cost can be hefty.

Fly carry-on only. Baggage fees vary wildly, but almost all airlines charge them and charge big.

Why pay for your clothes to fly with you? If everyone in your travel party checks a bag, your bill
can be astronomical before you ever even get to your destination. It's easy to reduce the amount
of stuff you pack: Make sure all your clothing coordinates, so you can take less and still make
more outfit combinations, take only two pair of shoes, plan to do a bit of laundry on your trip and
bring only travel- sized toiletries.

Pack your own snacks. Unless you're flying internationally, it's rare your flight comes with a free
meal. Snacks on the plane are not cheap and almost never healthy. Don't rely on what's on the
small menu and instead tuck some of your own snacks — granola bars, homemade muffins, fruit
and trail mix all make fantastic travel foods — into your bag and eat a lot better, and cheaper,
than other passengers.

Do you have a tried and true method of getting the best deal on your flights? Let us know.

(1)Tuesday is the best to book a ticket at a lower cost for ________.

A. fewer people travel on Tuesday. B. the flights are slower than usual.

C. fare sales are usually announced on Tuesday. D. flights are seldom delayed on Tuesday.

(2)Which of the following will help to cost you less for a flight?

A. Book your flight on Thursday. B. Travel surrounding Christmas.

C. Pick your seat the moment you book online. D. Book early morning flights.

(3)The underlined word “hefty” here has the same meaning as ________.

A. large B. heavy C. fierce D. acceptable

(4)To save the cost for the flight, you should ________.

A. check whether the upgrade is free before you bump to the first class

B. make sure your clothes and shoes are fit for a lot of walk

C. share your own snacks with other passengers

D. plan to do the washes on flight

【答案】 (1)C

Customers who come into the Waffle House recognize server Evoni Williams, a soft-spoken 18-
year-old from Texas City. It all started with a Facebook post. On the morning of March 3, Laura
Wolf was eating breakfast at the Waffle House in La Marque when she overheard an older man,
who reminded her of her late father, tell Williams he had trouble with his hands. The man, later
identified as regular customer Adrien Charpentier, had an oxygen tank nearby and needed help
cutting up his food. “Without hesitation,” Wolf wrote, Williams “took his plate and began cutting
up his ham.”

Impressed, Wolf posted the moment on her Facebook page to share the warmth and kindness
with all. The following day, Williams's Facebook notification(关注)began to light up. Her
friends saw Wolf's post and tracked her in it.

Williams had no idea that someone took a photo that morning. The diner was so busy that a
line extended outside the door. She said helping Charpentier was reflexive. She has been working
at Waffle House since last June to save for college, and this, she figured, was just the right thing
to do. “I would want someone to help my grandmother or grandfather,” Williams said.

The post began to make its rounds in La Marque and eventually landed in front of the city's
mayor, Bobby Hocking. He decided to declare March 8 as Williams's day, and also received an
email from Texas Southern University President Austin , asking if the school could present
Williams with a scholarship.

Williams still works at Waffle House five days a week and plans to do so until she starts classes
in the fall at Houston-based Texas Southern. Wolf said Williams does not have a car to get to
classes, but some people have offered to start a GoFundMe page for her, proving that a moment
of a kindness can change a life.

(1)Why did Wolf post the photo on Facebook?

A. The photo reminded her of her late father. B. It could satisfy her inner needs.

C. She was touched by the sight. D. The customer had trouble with his hands.

(2)What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

A. Without a second thought. B. After careful consideration.

C. Winning a reward. D. Better serving customers.

(3)What can we infer about Evoni Williams?

A. She seldom saw Charpentier come to the House for breakfast. B. It was GoFundMe page
that led to her good luck.

C. She is no longer working in service business. D. She has probably received a scholarship

for her college education.

(4)What is the author's purpose of writing the article?

A. To help Williams receive higher education. B. To introduce a random act of kindness.

C. To show that young generation can always help. D. To emphasize the influence of the
social media.

A bite from a tsetse fly (采采蝇) is an extremely unpleasant experience. It is not like a mosquito,
which can put its thin mouthpart directly into your blood, often without you noticing. In contrast,
the tsetse fly's mouth has tiny saws on it that saw into your skin on its way to suck out your blood.

To make matters worse, several species of tsetse fly can transmit diseases. One of the most
dangerous is a parasite that causes "sleeping sickness", or "human African trypanosomiasis"
to give it its official name. Without treatment, an infection is usually fatal.

Like so many tropical diseases, sleeping sickness has often been neglected by medical
researchers. However, researchers have long endeavored to understand how it avoids our bodies'
defence mechanisms. Some of their insights could now help us eliminate sleeping sickness
altogether.

There are two closely-related single-celled parasites that cause this deathly sleep: Trypanosoma
brucei rhodesiense and T. b. gambiense. The latter is far more common: it is responsible for up to
95% of cases, mostly in western Africa. It takes several years to kill a person, while T. brucei
rhodesiense can cause death within months. There are still other forms that infect livestock.

After the initial bite, sleeping sickness symptoms often start with a fever, headaches and aching
muscles. As the illness goes on, those infected become increasingly tired, which is where it gets
its name. Personality changes, severe confusion and poor coordination can also happen.

While medication does help, some treatments are toxic and can themselves be deadly,
especially if they are given after the disease has reached the brain.

It is worth noting that sleeping sickness is no longer as deadly as it once was. In the early 20th
Century several hundred thousand people were infected each year. By the 1960s the disease was
considered "under control" and had reached very low numbers, making its spread more
difficult. But in the 1970s there was another major epidemic, which took 20 years to control.

Since then, better screening programmes and earlier interventions have reduced the number
of cases dramatically. In 2009 there were fewer than 10,000 cases for the first time since records
began, and in 2015 this figure dropped to fewer than 3,000, according to the latest figures from
the World Health Organisation. The WHO hopes the disease will be completely eliminated by
2020.

While this decline looks positive, there may be many more cases that go unreported in rural
Africa. To eliminate the disease completely, infections have to be closely monitored.

More problematically, a series of new studies have shown that the parasite is more
complicated than previously believed.

Sleeping sickness has always been considered —— and diagnosed —— as a blood disease,
because T. brucei parasites can readily be detected in the blood of its victims.

(1)A tsetse fly is different from a mosquito in that________.

A. it can put its thin mouthpart directly into your blood B. all species of tsetse fly can

transmit diseases

C. it can spread a parasite that causes "sleeping sickness" D. its mouth has larger saws
than those on a mosquito

(2)What can be learned about "sleeping sickness" according to the text ?

A. It is formally called"human American trypanosomiasis". B. If left untreated, it can
possibly be deadly.

C. It remains as deadly as it used to be. D. It usually draws attention from medical
researchers.

(3)What is implied in the last three paragraphs ?

A. "Sleeping sickness" will be completely eliminated by 2020. B. The parasite causing "
sleeping sickness" is easy to detect now.

C. T. brucei parasites can only be detected in the blood of its victims. D. Data about "
sleeping sickness"cases may not be so accurate.

(4)What would be the best title of this passage ?

A. A mosquito that can carry deadly diseases. B. A bite from this fly puts you into a deadly
sleep.

C. Symptoms that are characteristic of "sleeping sickness". D. How to control deadly"
sleeping sickness" from a tsetse fly.

The University of Sheffield

Back to its origin

The University of Sheffield is a research university in the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire,
England. It is one of the original “red brick” universities, which are a group of top and famous old
universities. The University of Sheffield was originally formed by the combination of three
colleges. The Sheffield School of Medicine was founded in 1828, followed in 1879 by the opening
of Firth College by Mark Firth, a steel manufacturer (制造商), to teach arts and science subjects.
Firth College then helped to provide money for the opening of the Sheffield Technical School in
1884 to teach applied science. In 1897 the three institutions were joined together to form the
University College of Sheffield, which in turn became the University of Sheffield by Royal Charter

Sports are the base of my life, next to my mother who raised me when my dad left us. I have
been into sports since I was six years old. I have known many coaches and heard hundreds of
their tips, but they usually focused on drills to develop my skills and reach the next level of play.

When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawloski. I thought I
was certain to be selected for the school team since I had been in it the year before. I showed up
to the tryouts and put out about 90% effort since I thought I'd make it with no problem. That was
a big mistake.

Brian Pawloski is the hardest-working coach I have ever met. He didn't expect 100% effort, he
expected 200% effort. One example: he once made us do 40 suicide drills for the 40 lay-ups (投篮)
we missed in a game. Some think this is crazy, but it isn't. After this conditioning practice, as we
were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said,
was completely sincere. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high
school. He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not
working on basketball, I am reading a book that he thinks will help us better understand life's
challenges, including Wooden, Coach, and The Screwtape Letters.

In the first two years I slacked off, not putting forth my full potential. Now, unlike the coaches
of my youth, this man was interested in how he did off the court. He always made sure I kept up
with my studies and was able to be trusted. I can honestly say that on other coach has given me
so much advice on how to succeed in basketball, but more importantly, in life. My school is lucky
to have such a great person to teach, coach and influence their students. I will always remember
my high-school basketball days as one of the hardest times I have ever worked in my life not only
in basketball but in my growth as an individual.

16.阅读理解

I was born on the 17th of November 1828, in the village of Nam Ping, which is about four miles
southwest of the Portuguese Colony (殖民地) of Macao, and is located on Pedro Island lying west
of Macao, from which it is separated by a channel of half a mile wide.

As early as 1834, an English lady, Mrs. Gutzlaff, wife of a missionary to China, came to Macao.
Supported by the Ladies' Association in London for the promotion of female education in India
and the East, she immediately took up the work of starting a girls' school for Chinese girls, which
was soon followed by the opening of a boys' school.

Mrs. Gutzlaff's comprador(买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my
father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff's
school and it was doubtlessly through his influence and means that my father got me admitted
into the school. It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign
school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed. Most
certainly such a step would have been more suitable for Chinese public opinion, taste, and the
wants of the country, than to allow me to attend an English school. Moreover, a Chinese belief is
the only avenue in China that leads to political promotion, influence, power and wealth. I can
only guess that as foreign communication with China was just beginning to grow, my parents
hoped that it might be worthwhile to put one of their sons to learning English. In this way he
might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and
diplomatic world. I am wondering if that influenced my parents to put me into Mrs. Gutzlaff's
School. As to what other sequences it has eventually brought about in my later life, they were
entirely left in the hands of God.

(1)How was the author admitted to Mrs. Gutzlaff's school?

A. Through his father's friend's help. B. Through his own efforts to exams.

C. Through his father's request. D. Through Mrs. Gutzlaff's influence.

(2)Why did the author's parents put him into an English school?

A. An English school was more influential. B. Foreign trade with China was developing fast.

C. It met with Chinese public opinion. D. He could become a successful interpreter.

(3)What did the author think of his parents' decision to put him into an English school?

A. It was skeptical. B. It was mysterious. C. It was thoughtful. D. It was wonderful.

【答案】(1)A

(2)D

(3)B

using the stars.

A robot created by Washington State University (WSU) scientists could help elderly people with
dementia (痴呆) and other limitations live independently in their own homes.

The Robot Activity Support System or RAS, uses sensors installed in a WSU smart home to
determine where its residents are, what they are doing and when they need assistance with daily
activities. It navigates (定位) through rooms and around obstacles to find people on its own,
provides video instructions on how to do simple tasks and can even lead its owner to objects like
their medication or a snack in the kitchen.

combines the convenience of a mobile robot with the activity detection technology of a
WSU smart home to provide assistance in the moment, as the need for help is detected,
Bryan Minor, a postdoctoral researcher in the WSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science.

Currently, an estimated 50 percent of adults over the age of 85 need assistance with every day
activities such as preparing meals and taking medication and the annual cost for this assistance in
the US is nearly $$2 trillion. With the number of adults over 85 expected to triple by 2050,
researchers hope that technologies like RAS and the WSU smart home will relieve some of the
financial strain on the healthcare system by making it easier for older adults to live alone.

RAS is the first robot researchers have tried to incorporate into their smart home environment.
They recently published a study in the journal Cognitive Systems Research that demonstrates

how RAS could make life easier for older adults struggling to live independently.

20.阅读理解

If you want to convince the boss you deserve a pay rise or promotion, the solution could be
simple — eat the same food as they do. Psychologists have discovered managers are much more
likely to instantly trust us if we choose the same dishes as them.

During experiments, discussions over wages and work conditions were much more successful if
both sides chose to snack on the same treats. And shoppers were much more likely to buy a
product advertised on TV by someone eating a similar food to them at the time.

The reason is thought to be so-called similarity attraction theory — where people tend to like
others who have similar tastes or habits to themselves. But this is believed to be one of the first
studies highlighting the role of food in this relationship. Researchers at Chicago University in the
US conducted a series of experiments to examine food's role in earning trust.

In a test, participants were told to watch TV — where someone pretending to be a member of
the public praised a certain product. The volunteers were given Kit Kat bars to nibble (咬), while
the TV people ate either a Kit Kat or grapes as they talked.

The results showed viewers were much more likely to express an interest in buying the product
if the TV showed the other person eating a Kit Kat too.

The researchers added, “Although similarity in food consumption is not a sign of whether two
people will get along, we find consumers treat this as such. They feel more trusting of those who
consume as they do. It means people can immediately begin to feel friendship and develop a
bond, leading to smoother transactions (交易) from the start.”

Harley Street psychologist Dr. Lucy Atcheson said it was already known that wearing similar
clothes could instantly create trust. But this was the first report that food had the same effect.
She said, “This is really interesting. It makes sense as people feel they have common ground and
can trust the other person. That means negotiations are more likely to be successful.”

(1)According to the passage, customers are likely to buy a product from a dealer who ______.

A. has the same taste as them B. advertises his products on TV

C. reduces the price of his products D. pays attention to the quality of his products

(2)The experiments conducted by researchers at Chicago University show that ______.

A. food plays an important role in earning people's trust B. bosses like employees that have
the same taste as them

C. people who have similar tastes to their boss's earn more D. people have less interest in
buying products advertised on TV

(3)What can be inferred from the passage?

A. People who eat similar food are more likely to trust each other. B. People will get along
with each other if they like to eat similar things.

C. The effect of wearing similar clothes hasn't been proved by researchers. D. People are
more likely to make friends with those wearing the same clothes as them.

(4)Which of the following sayings can be an example of the similarity attraction theory?

A. Honesty is the best policy. B. All good things come to an end.

C. Birds of a feather flock together. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

【答案】(1)A
