In
order to tell you what I believe, I must bring up
something from my personal history.
The turning point of my life was my decision to
give up my business job and study music. My
parents, although sharing my love of music,
didn't think it was a good choice that I took up
music
as a job. Considering my family
background, this was understandable. My
grandfather had taught
music for nearly forty
years at Spring Hill College in Mobile, and though
he was much loved by his
students, he didn't
earn(挣钱) enough to provide for his large family.
As a result of this
example in the family, my
parents strongly asked me to go to the college
instead of a
conservatory(音乐学院) of music
although I loved my violin and spent most of my
spare time
practicing.
Before my
graduation from Columbia, the family ran into some
money problems and I felt it
was my duty to
leave college and take a job. That was why I took
a business job, which I always
think of as the
wasted years. I went into it for money, for being
able to help the family. Money is
all I go out
of it. It was not enough. I felt that life was
passing me by.
My wish was to save
enough to quit(退出)and then go to Europe to study
music. I
continued to make money, and finally,
bit by bit, I earned enough to make myself able to
go
abroad. The family got out of the trouble
and ▲ . I felt like a free man and sailed for
Europe. I
stayed for four years, worked harder
than I had ever dreamed of working and enjoyed
every
minute of it.
was
against the advice of all my friends and family,
but if I had stayed in business, I do not believe
I would have made a success of living.

(4)From the underlined
sentence
A. couldn't find his place in a

My grandfather had
taught music for nearly forty years at Spring Hill
College
in Mobile, and though he was much
loved by his students, he didn't earn(挣钱) enough
to
provide for his large family.
That was why I took a
business job, which I always think of as the
wasted years.
The family got out of the trouble
I felt
like a free man and sailed for Europe. I stayed
for four years,
worked harder than I had ever
dreamed of working and enjoyed every minute of it.

Mark, a
young person, tells me he wants to be a writer. I
always encourage such people, but I
also
explain that there's a big difference between a
writerand writing. In most cases
these people
are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long
hours alone at a typewriter(打字
机).
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private
and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by
fortune there are thousands more whose longing
is never rewarded(报答). When I left a 20-year
job in the US Coast Guard to become a writer,
I had no hopes at all.
What I did have
was a friend who found me my room in a New York
apartment building. It
didn't even
matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I
immediately bought a used typewriter
and felt
like a real writer.
After a year or
so, however, I still hadn't got a break and began
to doubt (MWE ) myself. It was
so hard to sell
a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew
I wanted to write. I had
dreamed about it for
years. I wasn't going to be one of those people
who die wonder in
I would keep
putting my dream to the test-even though it meant
living with uncertainty(不确定)
and fear of
failure. This is the shadowland of hope, and
anyone with a dream must learn to live
there.
(1)According to the author's idea,
writing is .
A.
enjoyable B. interesting
C. lonely D. boring
(2)When the author left his 20-year job, he
.
A. felt sad
B. lost his heart C. felt
unforgettable D. found himself
(3)When the author went to the New York
apartment building, .
A.
there was almost nothing there
B. there was everything there
C. the
author was pleased with it
D. the author was so happy
(4)What does
the underlined word
(5)What's the main idea of the
passage?
A. Tell us to study
hard.
B. Let us dream of succeeding.
C. Let us do something that we can't
accept.
D. Hold on to your dream even if
you meet difficulties.
【答案】(1)C
(2)B
(3)A
(4)D

Humans have learnt many things from
nature. These things have helped us in our daily
life. The
latest thing is self-repairing
clothing.
Scientists have developed a
special way for clothing to repair rips and tears
by itself, without
the need for sewing. It
works with materials such as cotton, linen and
wool. The scientists are
from the Naval
Research Office and Pennsylvania State University
in the USA. Scientists Dr Walter
Dressick and
Dr Melik Demirel looked at how a squid can cling
on to things so well. The research
team found
a protein in the rings of teeth that cover the
suckers on a squid. The protein is similar
to
the one found in the silk that spiders use to make
spider webs. It is very strong and elastic.
The new protein has been developed as part
of a coating, which is put on clothes. When the
coating is dipped in water, the area around
the rip or tear joins together in less than a
minute.
This could help clothes last longer
and save money for us. It could also be useful for
military and
survival clothes. People like
soldiers and mountaineers would be safer if they
had clothes that
could be repaired quickly and
easily. Professor Demirel spoke about the
invention. He said,
coatings are thin, less
than a micron, so they wouldn't be noticed in
everyday he
added,
making self-healing
textiles.
