AN ANALYSIS OF MARK TWAIN'S HUMOR IN THE
ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN
Ⅰ
.Introduction
Samuel
Langhorne
Clemens (November
30,
1835
–
April
21,
1910),
better
known by his pen name Mark Twain, born at a small village in Florida, Missouri, is an
American
author
and humorist.
He
is
noted
for
his
novels.
It
is
acknowledged
that
Mark Twain is a great literary giant of America in the late 19th century. It is he, the
first American writer, who fuses folk humor and serious literature into one whole and
shapes the world’s view of America.
Mark

In

before

there
were
many
writers
who

their

works,
however,
they
just

meaning and could not go far any longer. It is Make Twain who pushes humor to a
new height that is using humor and irony to satire the negative social phenomena and
their
own
characteristics.
And
The
Adventures
of
Huckleberry
Finn
also
confirms
Make Twain's own literature's place on the American literature. The famous American
writer Hemingway said that all modern American literature was from a book, namely,
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Mark Twain is the master of humor at the end of nineteenth century in the United
States as well as the outstanding representative of realistic literature. His major works

Ⅱ
.Humorous style in Mark Twain's works
Humor is the art of fun. It aims to give people pleasure but it always includes an
element
of
satire.
As
“the
tru
e
father
of
American
literature”
,
Mark
Twain
is
distinguished for his humor which is achieved mainly through the various figures of
speech, such as irony, exaggeration, contrast , anti- climax and repetition, etc, which
will
be
discussed
in
detail
with
the illustration of
some
of
his
famous works
in
the
paper.
A. Repetition
In
The
£
1.000.000
Bank-Note
,
we
may
quote
the
following
paragraph
as
an
illustration of repetition: They saw many honest faces go by that were not intelligent
enough; many that were intelligent, but not honest enough; many that were both, but
the
possessor
were
not
poor
enough,
or,
if
poor
enough;
were
not
strangers.
The
repetition of “enough” emphasizes that “I” is just the man that the two rich men have
found,
thus
starts
the
pro
tagonist’s
comic
experience,
so
the
readers
are
deeply
absorbed in Mark Twain’s humo
rous story.
B. Anti- climax
In
Running
for
Governor
,
at
the
beginning,
the
author
points
out
that
Mr.
Woodford and Mr. Hoffman--- my rivals were so despicable that
“it was plain that in
these
later
years
they
had
become
familiar
with
all
types
of
shameful
crimes”.
Compared with them, “I somehow felt that I had one prominent advantage over t
hese
gentlemen, and that was
good
character.”
On reading here, not
only the
protagonist
but
also
the
readers
have
the
confidence
that
“I”
must
be
the
winner
in
the
fight.
However,
to
every
reader’s
surprise.
“I”
g
ive
up
the
competition
at
last
and
even
admit
that
“I
was
not
equal
to
the
requirements
of
a
gubernatorial
campaign
in
the
state of New York.”

C. Clever use of pun
English is the language with the largest vocabulary in the world. In the course of
its development, English swallows anything and everything, naturally including a lot
of
homonym,
homographs
and
homonyms
and
so
on.
Mark
Twain
uses
the
pun
cleverly to perform wonders. In the novel
in a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's
court Americans
, the hero is knocked out in the fight in the factory and finds himself
in a totally strange place after waking. At this time, a young man introduces himself to
the hero that he is a page. But the hero is impatient and snapped:
“
Go long you aren
’
t
more than a page.
What
is
a
small
boy
who
is
smaller
than
page,
could
he
speak
with
people?
In
the
Stupid Child Foreign Travel
, Mark Twain satires a priest named Canon Fulbert
“Look
at the situation, she returned to her uncle the old cannon or son of a gun
Bishop Monastery monks agreed with gun. Son of a gun is the curse words, while the
old cannon is the old robber in American slang. The subtle bitter pun is really cunning
words.
“And
when we hear the word of cunning, inhibiting effect is relieved suddenly
which produces laugh
Ⅲ
. Mark Twain's humor in
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
But why Mark Twain's humor was moved to his readers? The reason not only is
that he is good at using humor to write the darkness and injustice in the world where
we live, not only is that he excels in using humor to write human deepest feelings that
we can not speak out ourselves, but also lies in his special humorous writing style, but
also
lies
in
his
unique
humorous
features.
So
next
let
us
talk
about
Make
Twain's
humor in detail in
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
.
.
A .The use of
“
I
”
In Mark Twain's major works, he always likes to use the first person to narrative
stories in his novels. So in his works, as his re
aders, we can find out many “I”
every
4
where
. “I” not only
can represent the writer himself, but also can let our readers much
easier
understand
Mark
Twain's
works
and
follow
the
writer's
own
thoughts
in
his
novels. So the fact is that Mark Twain just uses the mouth of the hero to speak out his
own ideas.
In
the
story
of
The
Adventures
of
Huckleberry
Finn
,
using
the
first-person
narrative way, Mark Twain lets Huckleberry Finn himself tell the story of his personal
experiences along the Mississippi River where he lives , which not only can increase
the
authenticity
of
the
story,
but
also
can
allow
his
readers
to
feel
no
doubt
to
the
experiences
of
Huckleberry
Finn.
In
the
novel
Huck
that
a
14
year-old
boy
naive,
honest
narrative
as
a
clue,
let
the
readers
follow
Huck's
footsteps,
along
the
Mississippi River rafting. To a child's perspective to record what one sees and hears,
this makes the readers and the protagonist view intersection and empathy, emotional
resonance
and
also
makes
the
reader
know
clearly
how
to
hack
on
false
stereotype
weariness of life as well as to free a new life of adventure eager longing. Mark Twain
designs
the
first-person
narrative
writing
technique,
to
provide
the
readers
with
a
sense
of
narrative
events
with
the
best
perspective,
so
that
the
reader
can
not
only
truly,
clearly
feel
the
heroin
’
s
e
experiences
and
emotions,
but
can
correctly
understand and judge the social realism of the America at that time.
B. Humorous and satirical unity
When Mark Twain began writing, American literature is literature's heyday, so he
can insight into the inner nature of things with his rich life experience, sharp eyes and
he sharply attacks the absurd phenomenon. So we can easily find that his creation not
only lets the readers feel humor, but also is regarded as a kind of criticism at that time
in the American society. Unreasonable and unjust social reality conceals many things.
Such as in
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
, Mark Twain describes two ugly and
antics cheats

so-called

nobody even with no sense of shame. The two cheats together set up a stage and tell
