Dear Smith,
How nice to hear from you again. You want to know somethingabout the Listening Part in our Eng
lish Paper for the EntranceExamination of Colleges.
I’d
like to give you a brief introductionabout it
here. There are two sections in this part.
The first one includes 5 short dialogues. We can hear each for once and then choose one out ofth
e three answers to a question about the dialogue. The question and possible answers are on thep
aper.
In Section 2 there are 5 long conversations or monologues, each of which may be heard twicewit
h 2 to 4 questions raised about it.
The whole part, which mainly tests our understanding of spoken English, lasts about 20 minutes.
We tick the answers on the paper first and then copy them on the answer sheet by blackening th
esmall brackets with A, B, or C with a 2B pencil.
Best wishes.

In
today’s
society, competition and cooperation are equallyimportant. People are cooperators in t
heir life.
They share information, natural resources, human resourcesand many other things. Cooperation i
s the way to a happy the same time they are competitors. In competition, theylearn from t
heir opponents, gain courage and t competition, science and technology woul
d not have been developed so rapidly.
And without cooperation, the world would be quite different. Cooperation and competition are li
ketwo sides of a person. They
can’t
be separated.

Last week, we did research into how laid-off workers get theirnew jobs. We had a discussion in th
ree groups and then beganour research separately.
Group One surfed on the Internet and learned that most of thelaid-off workers had already got th
eir new jobs. In the vocationaltraining center, the students in Group Two were told that therewer
e five training courses for laid-off workers. After training, they began working as repairers, cooks, t
ypists, household workers and salespersons. The other students interviewed some laid-offworker
s who had got new jobs. A woman said,
“With
the help of the city government,
I’ve
foundmy
job. …”
What a great deal
we’ve
learned through the research.

Ladies and gentlemen,
Yesterday our teacher of English asked me to say somethingabout pollution. Now, I give you my vi
ews on this vital question.
As a matter of fact, the effects of industrial pollution are wellknown to everyone --- polluted air, p
olluted water and pollutedearth. Though a great deal is already being done to control these effec
ts, the problem of pollutionis still serious. Continued population increase, smog and chemical was
te produced by factories andcars, not only threatens to exhaust our resources, but also pollutes o
ur environment. We do needclean air, safe water and our
children’s
health.
In my opinion, to solve the problem of pollution, everyone must refrain from polluting ourenviron
ment. We should know that this is the duty of every individual, not that the governmentalone.

Dear Tom,
I felt terribly sorry to learn that both your parents had beenkilled in the September 11th Incident.
In this incident the WorldTrade Centre, which used to be one of the tallest buildings in theworld,
was completely destroyed and thousands of people losttheir lives.
I’m
very angry about the terror
ist activities.
We are against all forms of terrorist activities and support the war against the terrorism.
Don’t
be too sad.
Don’t
lose heart. After all, the majority of the people in the world love peace. Ih

Attention, please!
I’m
going to give you a summary of
today’sdiscussion
about whether we would
go online in our spare time.
Most students think they (we) can go online as much as possiblein our spare time because we are
free then. Through theInternet, they can gain plenty of the newest knowledge and thelatest new
s at home and abroad.
What’s
more, network offersthem(us) a convenient way to communicate
with each other. The Internet makes their livesoutside class colourful and various.
On the other hand, a few students partly agree to this idea. Going online is part of our daily life.T
hey suggest a time limit.
They’ve
found that more students are playing computer games insteado
f studying their lessons.
There’re
few students who are often absent from school for days.

Students Like Optional Courses
This term our school had offered more than 10 optionalcourses, from which students can
choose. The courses aregiven from 3:30 to 5:00 every Tuesday afternoon.
Students take great interest in the optional courses. Their favourites are computer, spoke
n English, arts and so on. They say they have got a great deal of practice and they have l
earned a lot that isnot taught in textbooks.
However, students hope more optional courses will be offered while their homework sho
uld bereduced. They suggest more trips and visits should be organized so that they can l
earn moreabout what is going on outside school.

Dear Mr. Headmaster,
I am writing this letter to tell you something about our canteen.
There are many kinds of food in our canteen, and generally theyare cheap. Some food is delicious
. The dining environment hasbeen improved, with the walls painted and some pictures postedup.
The students are satisfied with the new look.
But students are not given a proper helping of every dish. Also, as the number of the studentscon
tinues to increase, there is not enough space for us to have meals there. As a result, many ofus go
out to have meals.
All in all, there is still much room for improvement in food quality and service.
Best regards,
Sincerely yours,
Li Ming
