In real life, on the one hand the young parents feel helpless because they are too busy to

America is well known for being a melting pot of different ethnic groups and cultures, but nowhere
is this diversity more pronounced than in Queens, New York.

Here, second- generation Puerto Ricans live alongside third- generation Greeks and first-
generation Koreans, all united by a common feeling of pride in their American identity. However,
they are also proud and curious about their ancestral roots. National Geographic's Genographic
Project, also known as the Human Family Tree, set out to trace the origins by examining their
genetic makeup using a simple DNA test. What interested them more was something that intrigues
us all: the history of our recent ancestry. One recurring theme among immigrants seems to be the
hard work and sacrifices that went into building a new life, and how their descendants now feel a
duty to honor that effort by working hard too. Here is one Queens resident's story.

Richard, 38

My great- grandfather Tomas came to America from Poland when he was fifteen. His mother had
died, and his father remarried. Tomas didn't like his stepmother, so he ran away to Belgium, where
he boarded a ship to America

without a ticket. Arriving in America with nothing, he got a job on
the railroads in California. Then one day he saw an announcement in a newspaper that was read by
immigrants. It was from his brother in New York who was also seeking his fortune in America and
was looking for him. Tomas got in touch and they had an emotional reunion in New York, where
Tomas subsequently settled. This is the story that my grandmother has passed down to us, to my
parents, and all my aunts and uncles. She is an amazing woman and I suppose: the one who holds
us all together. She's actually quite forgetful now, but she never forgets family details. What that has
meant is that all of us have a strong family bond and a strong sense of belonging to a group that has
struggled and fought together to steered here.

Even a small increase in light activity such as washing dishes, or walking around the house might
help prevent an early death among older adults, researchers say.

activity, that just moving around and doing light intensity activity will have strong effects and

is beneficial,

Published in the BMJ, the latest research was based on a review of eight studies involving a

total of more than 36,000 people with an average age of almost 63 years. Participants were

followed for five to six years; 2,149 deaths were recorded. All of the studies involved monitoring

the physical activity of individuals who had activity trackers, and the studies did not rely on
self-reporting, which, the experts noted, could be unreliable.

For each study participants were split into four equal-sized groups, based on the total amount of
time spent actively, and the risk of death assessed, taking into account factors such as age, sex,
body mass index, and socioeconomic status. This was then repeated for an amount of activity at
different levels of intensity. The results were analyzed together to give an overview. The team found
a greater amount of activity was linked to a lower risk of death. The results held for different
intensities of activity. The team said the study supported the message
more often

However, the study had limitations.
It only looked at the situation for middle age and older

adults, most of whom lived in the US or Europe, and some of the effect could be due to those

people with a higher risk of death being less likely to be related to physical activity. Physical

activity levels also were only measured over one period of time.

Dr Gavin Sandercock, from the University of Essex, said the results suggested moving more
brought bigger benefits than simply reducing the time of sitting, another factor measured in the
study.

even just a little bit more physical activity can have important public health benefits,
