Every day I see advertisements in the newspapers and on the buses claiming that it is easy and
quick to learn English. There is even a reference to William Shakespeare or Charles Dickens to
encourage
learners
even
more.
When
I
see
advertisements
like
this,
I
don't
know
whether
to
laugh or cry. But many people must believe these ridiculous claims, or else the advertisements
would not appear.

Of course it is clear that students who go to England to learn English have a great advantage
over others, but too many cannot afford to do so. Some go to the opposite extreme and think
they can teach themselves at home with dictionaries. But it is wrong to assume that each word in
English has a precise equivalent in another language, let alone produces good pronunciation and
intonation.

Most teaching is still based on behaviorist psychology. Behaviorists are fond of making students
repeat phrases and making sentences. If we were parrots or chimpanzees, these methods might
be successful. A large number of theorists seem to think it is a pity we aren't, because it would
make it easier to use their methods.

In my personal opinion, no one can ever learn to speak English or any other language unless he
is
interested
in
it.
Human
beings,
unlike
parrots
and
chimpanzees,
do
not
like
making
noises
unless they understand what the noises mean and can relate them to their own lives. It is worth
remembering that language is a means of communication. What they listen to and read cannot
be a formula. It must be real.

There is another relevant point worth mentioning here. We need other people to talk to and
listen to when we communicate. They can work with us and practice the unfamiliar forms with us
in real situations, talking to each other about real life language.

12-year-old

the
child's
parents
had
recently
moved
her
from
the
hospital to her home in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Some days later the girl's breath quickened,
and her father phoned the family's hospice nurse. Please come, he said.

The nurse knew the visit would require more than four hours of her time: a two-hour drive in
each direction, plus her time with the girl. Why don't we connect over FaceTime, she asked. The
father agreed, and they connected.

The nurse asked the father to move his daughter gently to her side, then to her back, to lift the
child's shirt. The nurse would ask: What do you see, what concerns you, and the father would
explain. In this fashion the pair examined the girl --- the nurse on her computer, the father his
iPad. Together they decided that the nurse's presence was not necessary, that the child had more
time.

Later, the father reported feeling comforted by the nurse. He appreciated her availability, the
fact that she could see what he saw, and their ability to discuss it in real time.

Telemedicine has become a trend in America. Some hospitals have gone so far as to specially

“My experience is that, once you get past some initial hurdles, you can maintain an intimate,
immediate connection with patients that in some cases may be more useful than even in-person
interactions,” David says.

1

Why did the nurse suggesting connecting via FaceTime?

A. Because she was not allowed to leave her clinic. B. Because she had to take care of other

How did the father think of the telemedicine service?

A. He doubted the quality of the service. B. He thought highly of the service.

C. He insisted the service be improved. D. He challenged the authority of the nurse.

How
much
television
do
you
watch?
Did
you
really
give
an
honest
answer?
A
recent
study
shows that people aren't totally truthful about their television-watching habits.

The
study
in
question
was
conducted
at
Ball
State
University
in
the
US.
Researchers
there
wanted to find out how much television people view according to their age. The study was paid
for by a council associated with the Nielsen Company, which determines television ratings. The
conclusions were that people spend more than 8 hours a day looking at a screen. This included
cell phones and computers

but the majority were television screens.

There are three interesting things about this study. The first is that people are exposed to more
than
one
hour
of
advertisements
per
day.
The
second
is
that
even
with
access
to
DVDs
and
internet videos, television is still the most popular media source. The third is that the amount of
screen-watching people do is relatively the same from the ages of 18-65.

So, if everyone is watching television, why lie about it? Well, if someone admits they watch
television for five or six hours, they could be considered a couch potato. Michael Phillips, one of
the
study's
main
researchers,
says,
“There's
a
social
stigma
for
people
who
watch
too

much
television. Sometimes, however, watching the latest reality show or the funniest sitcom gives co-
workers and friends fun things to talk about.”

Even if you do watch a lot of television, perhaps we can use this study as a reason to be honest
with
ourselves
about
how
much
time
we
spend
in
front
of
the
television.
I
mean,
after
all,
everyone else is doing it...

1

Why do people lie about how much TV they watch?

A. Because the show they watched is not the latest.
B. Because they may be laughed at by
co- workers or friends.

C. Because
they
don't
want
others
to
know
what
they
watched.
D. Because
there's
something negative attached to watching too much TV.

2

Which of the following is true according to the study?

A. The
most
popular
media
source
is
the
internet.
B. 18-year-olds
watch
more
TV
than
someone in their 60s.

C. People are exposed to over than an hour of advertisement a day.
D. Researchers say that
people watch over 8 eight hours of television a week.

3

How could people feel to be considered as a couch potato?

A. comfortable B. ashamed C. excited D. satisfied

4

What idea does the author mainly want to express with the article?

A. what the effects of watching TV are.
B. how much television we should watch every day.

C. there are some interesting facts of watching TV.
D. people lie about how much television
they watch.

【答案】

1

D

2

It's predicted that by 2050, climate change will have accelerated the rate at which temperatures

One
of
the
most
striking
findings
of
a
newly
research
in
the
UK
is
that
of
the
people
interviewed, one in two believes that it is becoming more difficult to meet someone to start a
family with.

Why
are
many
finding
it
increasingly
difficult
to
start
close
relationships?
Does
modem
life
really make it harder to fall in love? Or are we making it harder for ourselves? It is certainly the
case today that contemporary couples benefit in different ways from relationships. Women no
longer rely upon partners for money or status. A man doesn't expect his wife to be in (
唯一的
)
charge of running his household and raising his children.

But perhaps the knowledge that we can live perfectly well without a partnership means that it
takes much more to persuade people to abandon their independence.

In theory, finding a partner should be much simpler these days. Only a few generations ago,
your
choice
of
soul
mate
was
limited
by
geography,
social
convention
and
family
tradition.
Although it was never clear

many marriages were essentially arranged. Now those barriers have
been broken down. You can approach a builder or a brain surgeon in any bar in any city on any
given evening. When the world is your oyster (
牡蛎
), you surely have a better chance of finding a
pearl.

But
it
seems
that
the
old
conventions
have
been
replaced
by
the
limitations
of
choice.
The
expectations of partners are raised to an unmanageable degree: good looks, impressive salary,
kind to grandmother, and right socks. There is no room for error in the first impression.

We think that a relationship can be perfect. If it isn't, it should be ended. We work to protect
ourselves against future heartache and don't put in the hard emotional labor needed to build a
strong relationship. Twelve-hour work at the office makes relaxed after-hours dating difficult. The
cost of housing and child-raising creates pressure to have a stable income and Career before a life
partnership.

1

What is a contemporary family like in UK today?

A. Couples share the burdens. B. Men begin to depend on women.

C. Women are responsible for housework. D. It is difficult to take care of a family.

2

Why do people preserve their independence?

A. To live alone happily.
B. To have more choices.

C. To avoid marriages.
D. To ignore traditions.

3

What makes it hard for people to date?

A. Mental headache in dating. B. The pressure to survive.

C. Bad luck in finding a partner. D. The faith between life partners.

4

What is the author trying to inform us in this text?

A. Perfect marriages conflict with independence.

B. People should, spend more money on marriages.

C. The expectations and reality separate the lovers.

D. Independence is much more important than love.

Anxiety

among
college

though
depression,

More
than
half
of
students
visiting
campus clinics cite anxiety as a health concern, according to a recent study of more than 100,000
students nationwide by the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State. Nearly one in six
college
students

with
or
treated
for
anxiety
within

according to the annual national survey by the American College Health Association.

The
causes
range
widely,
experts
say,
from
mounting
academic
pressure
at
earlier
ages
to
overprotective parents to engagement with social media. Anxiety has always played a role in the
development of a student's life, but now more students experience anxiety so acute that they are
seeking professional help. Like many college clinics, the Center for Counseling and Psychological
Services
at
the
University
of
Central

(UCF)

of
clients: 15.2
percent
over
last

Anxiety has become characteristic of the current generation of college students, said Dan Jones,
the director of Counseling and Psychological Services at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.
C. Because of increasingly pressures during high school, he and other experts say, students arrive
at college preloaded with stress. Accustomed to extreme parental oversight, many seem unable
to
govern
themselves.
And
with
parents
so
accessible,
students
have
had
less
incentive
to
develop life skills. “They can't tolerate discomfort or having to struggle,” Dr Jones said.

More often, anxiety is mild and temporary, the indication of a student under the control of a
normal developmental issue-learning time management, for example, or how to handle rejection
from a sorority. Mild anxiety is often treatable with early, modest interventions. But to care for
rising
numbers
of
severely
troubled
students,
many
counseling
centers
have
moved
to
triage

for first appointments.

Like
many
college
counseling
centers,
UCF
has
designed
a
variety
of
daily
workshops
and
therapy groups that implicitly and explicitly address anxiety, depression and their triggers. Next
fall the center will test a new app for treating anxiety with a seven-module cognitive behavioral
program, accessible through a student's phone and augmented with brief videoconferences with
a therapist. It also offers semester-long, 90-
minute weekly therapy groups, such as “Keeping Calm
and
in
Control”,
“Mindfulness
for
Depression”
and
“Building
Social
Confidence”
-for
students
struggling with social anxiety.

1

Which of the following contributes to anxiety according to the text?

A. Protection from teachers. B. An app in students' phones.

C. Increasingly learning pressure. D. Management of time learning.

2

What does the underlined word “incentive” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

What's the purpose of those therapy groups mentioned in the last paragraph?

A. To help students suffering anxiety.

B. To test what social anxiety is.

C. To introduce the cognitive behavioral program of UCF.

If you're showering every day, you're probably over doing it. In fact, showering too often can

We

oiled machine,” he says. “A
daily shower isn't necessary.”

Of course, your situation may vary. If you have a job like car maintenance or construction, you'll
obviously have a visible layer of dirt you'll need to wash off every single day. Similarly, if you work
out every day, you may not have any health risks by washing every day, but you'll still be smelly. If
you feel like you need to take daily showers for aesthetic

reasons, at least make most
of them light showers. “I tell patients who shower daily not to soap their whole bodies,” Mitchell
says. Hit your pits, butt and groin, which are the areas that produce strong smells. The rest of
your body doesn't need much soaping, he says.

Too much time spent under the hot water can dry out your skin, cause cracks
(裂纹)
that can
lead to infections or germs getting into your skin, and take away the natural oils on your skin that
help keep it healthy. So, even if you're aiming to be your most presentable, be sure to keep it
